The officers were all cruel people, not just to the others in Finn's position. It wasn't that they believed in the First Order. Just that they wanted to burn the galaxy down. They revelled in it. That wasn't Poe.
"An excellent leader, though. I can see why they'd want you there." He cared, which was his downfall, but that caring made him one hell of a man to follow. Maybe with another army or outside of a war... But that wasn't their reality.
It would have been nice, though. For Poe to whisk him away, even if it was on a Star Destroyer. They'd be together, then. Sort of.
