Tomorrow was going to be a busy and heavy day for Rey. It was the day where she'd agree to return to the mortal realm and welcome the season that they depended on the most; spring. The chance for new life to grow. For day light to come and bring about change, pushing away death for another year. For the next few months, she would be gone from her husbands' bed and tend to her duties. Bless the lands, attend the festivals held in her honor, and go about her merry way until it was time for her to be reunited.
It didn't get easier as the years went on. There was still the same feelings of anxiety and restlessness, wanting nothing more than to get everything over with and then head home. Honestly, she really should talk to her priestesses and followers to simply have one full day to mark spring and leave it at that. But no, Demeter wouldn't be pleased and it had been enough of a fight to get this far.
However....this year was different. Word had spread far and wide about a vision that the Oracle in Delphi had received. Rey only heard bits and pieces of it, far more concerned with her home in the Underworld to pay attention. Those visions pertained more to the Gods on the surface, nothing happened in the Underworld, least someone wanted to incur the wrath of the three of them. Hell hath no fury like the Kings and Queen of the Underworld.
So, for now, she was preparing herself in her room and writing things down for Poe and Finn to help them deal with the months of separation. Little love notes to cheer them up, scattered about their home for them to find when they needed them. Other notes pertaining to the the garden (new flowers, where they could possibly be put), and where she had other flower crowns for the souls of children who died too soon. Rey finished the last note before getting up from her writing desk, leaving quill, parchment, and ink alone in favor of leaving her quarters to go to their shared living space.
She wanted to crawl into their bed and spend one last night in their embrace. Her long, soft brown hair cascading down her back in soft waves. A flowy bronze dress that was comfortable, and easily pulled off to sleep nude or for fun.
She only hoped neither of them were still working, or passed out from the late hour of the evening.
Finn had worked long and hard but he hadn't focused on a moment of it. Their Rey was about to leave them again. He tried to be more upbeat, tried to save his grief for after she was already gone, but it seemed to be welling up early.
He knew that she was preparing and that it was important, so after he was done with his duties, Finn took a seat near her door and waited patiently.
When she came into the room, it was like life itself and walked in. Finn relaxed and smiled up at her, trying not to dwell on the fact that she'd soon be gone. She was here now so what did the future matter?
"Hello, love," he said with a soft smile, unfolding himself and rising from his seat to hold her hand and press kisses to her arm. "You look lovely." She always did. He hoped his repetition didn't dull the compliment over time.
Poe had been scarce, for most of the day. He didn't tell them where he was going, and hoped they just assumed he was where he usually was - judging souls before putting them in their proper place. Collecting the silver tithe. But not today. Today, he had taken his partners' distractions and disappeared.
He didn't actually enter the room. He just felt when his better halves were together, and a second later he appeared in a corner, black and purple smoke dissipating around him.
He was in a bad mood, that much was clear. But it wasn't aimed at them. He was tense, alert. He didn't echo Finn's compliments, not because they weren't true but because he knew they would come out edged if he tried.
So instead he just walked towards where Finn was on the bed. "Is everything prepared?" He finally asked both of them. It wasn't what he wanted to say. But he'd get there in a minute.
A bright smile graced Rey's lips, preparing to crawl into his lap, but he took her hand and kissed her skin. It was always hard to leave her beloveds. Difficult to stay far from them for the weeks or months that she was needed. They couldn't necessarily come up from the Underworld, but the fact that they were put into this position was still unfair. None of the other Gods had to deal with this mess, but if for the rest of the year they could be together, then so be it.
Maybe one day, Demeter wouldn't be as harsh and over protective as she was now.
"Hello my love," she greeted in soft tones, her free hand caressing the side of Finn's face, moving closer until her body was pressed against his. She leaned in, pressing a kiss to his shoulder and moved to bury her face in the crook of his neck, breathing in his scent and committing it to memory. It would have to do until she came home and they could be one again.
"You look handsome, as always." Because it was true, and gods, she would miss waking up to that smile. She was preparing to lean in for another kiss when she felt the room shift, purple and black smoke rising and Poe coming through. Rey looked over at him, concerned etched in her features. He was in a bad mood, possibly over a long day, or because of tomorrow. It was a 50/50 shot at this point.
"Everything's prepared, yes," Rey replied, her eyes roaming over Poe's form, looking for any signs of a struggle or possible scuffle.
"You're troubled." No shit, but someone had to say it. Sure he got grumpy around this time of year, but there was something else...something weighing on him?
"The months will go by quickly enough and I'll back..." he knew this, all of them did...so what changed?
Finn smiled tearfully against her neck, trying to not get overly emotional about all this. How could he not? It was one of that embraces he'd have with her for a time? To gods like them, months seemed like nothing... except when she was away. Then they seemed to stretch into infinity.
He pulled away when he felt Poe arrive but one glance told him that the other was indeed troubled. It could have been because of the day, but he wasn't sure. In fact... he wasn't sure where Poe had been all day.
His hand reached out to him, unsure if he'd so much as come closer. "What's on your mind?"
He didn't stay back - taking Finn's hand when it was offered and allowing the man to tug him onto the bed.
"I went to Delphi."
That wasn't a small admission. Technically, Finn and Poe weren't supposed to go to the surface. At least not often. They'd broken that rule to kidnap Rey, and it had only gotten stricter since.
Plus, you know, just showing up had a tendency to reinforce terrible omens. Comets appeared in the sky. Eclipses. That sort of thing.
But he'd gone anyway.
"The dead have been spreading whispers and I went to hear it for myself." He looked at Rey, his face hard. "I don't think you should go."
Rey straightened a little in Finn's hold. Poe had gone to the surface. He had gone to Delphi and they all knew what laid there. This was a very bad thing, and already she wanted to reach over and hold Poe, whisper to him things would be okay. However, her words would do little to soothe his worries.
"What?" What did he mean by that, and while she didn't want to judge the dead (really, it was more for Poe to do), some of them became so desperate at times that they told lies to help bolster their chances of a better afterlife. No, no, she shouldn't jump to conclusions--she would not share that trait with her mother.
"Have you spoken the Fates? It's possible what was said could be wrong." And the Fates were the ones who could truly say what the held. But, very few went to them and for good reason. Messing with destiny or the Fates, would only end in despair.
"I can't break my promise. I can see about coming home early, but I have to go." Least they anger everyone and have it rain fire and ash for eons on end.
Finn's heart sank when Poe explained himself, his grip on his tightening. He had heard the same whispers. But that was all they were: whispers. Souls whispered about everything. To take any of it for truth would lead to endless paranoia.
But if Poe went to the Oracle and still felt this strongly about it-...
"If it was-..." He paused trying to think this through on so little information. "If it was for your safety... just a single year shouldn't-... We could explain it to them." Or perhaps one of them could go with her somehow.
"I tried to speak to the Fates. Clotho turned me away. Said that it was better I didn't know. She may as well have confirmed it a hundred times," He muttered. Clotho was the kindest one, but also the one furthest from Poe's domain. She spun the threads of life. Atropos was far closer to his domain, cutting them.
But if he asked about Rey's thread...
Rey shouldn't even have one, should she? She was no mortal.
"The Oracle said that you wouldn't return. In less blunt words and I couldn't figure out how, but - You shouldn't go. If they want to punish us for keeping you safe by starving their own people, that says a hell of a lot more about them than us."
She wouldn't return? But, why? How? A god couldn't be killed, not that she knew anyway. Yes, the Titans were struck down and cage by Zeus but, that shouldn't have any bearing on them. Unless it was more about confining a God, in which case there were options for that. But the greater question was why?
"That doesn't make any sense. Demeter wouldn't do such a thing, neither would anyone else." Hell, they needed her to make sure spring came and created more crops and festivals--more livestock to grow and slaughter in tribute to them. She hugged Finn tighter for a moment before pulling away, her mind swirling, working, trying to find some rationale behind what was said.
"There wouldn't be a balance and that would throw everything else off." But, who would benefit from it? Who would benefit from the chaos of it? Ares? War and rage would consume the lands for resources and the Underworld would have more souls in it....too much death and not enough life, or rebirth.
"I can ask Artemis to go with me, or I could consult Athena." One of them was bound to have an answer, but she had to go.
Athena was wise but only if she had the information to deliver. Perhaps she could consult on points of safety. And surely Artemis could protect Rey if she had the time, but-
He glanced to Poe, his frown deepening and tongue feeling as if it was turning to ash. "One of us could go with you." That would leave one of them alone in Hell and the mortals to feel the effects of Hades on Earth. Yet-
"They won't like it, but you're right about a balance. They'll all like it less if something were to happen to you. And we certainly don't want that."
Poe clicked his tongue. Athena didn’t like him, and he wasn’t all that fond of her, but Artemis wasn’t so bad. Would he really be okay with entrusting Rey with her?
But then Rey made a suggestion he liked better.
“They’ll know we’re serious, if we go to the waking world with you.” Even if it really would fuck up a lot of stuff for both the living and the dead.
He drew closer, sliding an arm around Rey and pulling her tight against him, pushing his face against her throat. When he spoke, the words almost vibrates against her skin.
“I refuse to lose you, Rey. They’re all just jealous that you want to be here.”
One of them going to the waking world? To the mortal realm and leave the other in the Underworld? It would cause more chaos and fuck everything over, ten times! She understood Poe's worry and concern, truly she did. She hated leaving either of their sides, and if there was another way, then surely they would've found it now.
She returned his embrace, wrapping her arms around his waist, tilting her head up to expose her throat, skin for him to touch, kiss or mark if he wished. Her hand roamed upwards, up to his head where her fingers started to card through his hair.
"They are jealous of us that we love each other, and have trust in each other." Unlike Zeus who caused more trouble than anything. Or the affairs that he managed to have--staying loyal to his family seemed to go out the window whenever something new and pretty caught his attention.
She continued to hold onto Poe, casting her gaze to Finn to gauge his reaction. A stray thought entered her mind that gave her more pause.
"..what if this is all a distraction?" she murmured to them. "If you two are separated, it would cause chaos and those locked in Tartarus could use it as a means to escape."
It made some sense. Make up a prophecy about her just as it was her time to return to the surface to distract the three of them. It was far too coincidental.
Finn didn't join the embrace, favoring to keep his distance to try and think this through logically. She raised a good point, honestly. It could very well be a trap rather than a warning. A plan to make the Underworld weaker and cause enough of a scene to likely destroy the world. But at what end? Did they simply want to destroy the humans? Was there another reason?
"You could be right," he decided quietly. "But what if you're wrong? What if you are the target? Or what if no matter what we do, they still get the chaos they want?" Is that even their goal? Who are they?
"Perhaps-" He paused to glance up at Poe, only seeing the back of his head. "Perhaps you should go alone, pretend that things aren't amiss. Poe and I can search for this threat and destroy it. Perhaps we won't raise suspicion that way."
Poe made a grunt, hating that the two of them had a point.
"I don't care if it's Zeus himself," he grumbled, his grip around her tightening. "They can try to take you from us. They can just damn well try it."
He was tempting fate, a little, but he also didn't care. The power of the underworld was steady and constant, only ever building with each new soul introduced to it. They'd outlast the entire pantheon, if it came to it. The dead would still be dead, long after the world burned.
Finn’s idea made the most sense. They could execute both and cover all bases. They would fight to stay together. People did under estimate Rey, thinking she was only sunshine and flowers, but she was as strong as the rest of them. Something she used to her advantage.
“They won’t. We all had an agreement, anyone trying to break it will face Hell itself,” she told Poe, continuing to card her fingers through his hair, trying to soothe her husband while trying to figure out what else it could be.
“We can do both. You two can stay here and search for the threat. I can go with Artemis and search as well.” Cover both areas and deal with what could come. Rey pressed a kiss to Poe’s head.
“We’ll stay together, our hearts are bound together. No one can undo that.”
Finn was one of the few that knew not to underestimate Rey. She could do more than take care of herself, and he had to trust her to do that. Only-... To let her go knowing there was a threat, to not be with her to face it- The whole situation made him feel sick.
He stepped forward to wrap his arms around both of his loves, feeling their time together quickly folding to a close.
"If-... If something happens, just come home. Don't try to stay. Please, if something happens, come back home to us."
“I will. I know I can always come home,” she told them, not caring if Zeus or Demeter were pissed with her for it. However....if her home and her husbands were in danger, she would rather take on the fight herself. She wouldn’t lose either of them. It wouldn’t come down to that, a fate she absolutely refused.
She felt Finn against her back, the three of them staying close, needing one another for comfort and strength.
“I won’t hesitate, promise.” To call, to return home...but they had a plan more or less in place. Tonight was her last night with them and they really ought to make to count.
“My loves...” Rey murmured, pressing another kiss into Poe’s hair, one hand unwinding from his waist of moving back to feel for Finn, along his side.
“We have a plan, we know we can count on each other. I don’t want our last night to be filled with fear. It’ll be fine. We’ll get through it, but...” she pulled back slightly from Poe, if so she could lean in to press a kiss to the side of his neck and her hand slid towards the inside of Finn’s thigh towards his crotch.
“I want to give myself to both of you. One last time until we’re together.”
Even with her promise and touch, it was difficult for Finn to let go of that fear. All he wanted was for Rey to be safe.
But they could do nothing right this moment except perhaps plan a little more. Yet he wanted to spend his last day with Rey in joy and bliss. That was probably impossible now, but she at least deserved his effort.
So he didn't pull away from her touch. His stance widened a bit as he stepped closer to press his body to hers, lips trailing along her soft skin to her neck. "We'll get through it," he repeated for himself.
There was no way Poe was going to be able to completely turn his mind away
from where it had been brooding all day, but if anything, that made him
want to indulge more rather than less. He trusted her to be able to
defend herself - she was stronger than he was, in many ways, despite
what others might assume from the outside. She was often stronger than he
and Finn put together. But Poe didn't deal with being on the outside of a
plan very well. He didn't like being told to sit back. So even though she
had every right to deal with this herself - he couldn't stand the thought
of not doing anything. But maybe he and Finn would be able to find whoever
was plotting against them.
Maybe then he'd make her proud.
He pressed his body to her other side, threading an arm around her waist
and letting his fingers catch the rope that held up Finn's chiton.
"You know I'd never deny you," He rumbled lowly, almost in her ear, before
letting his hand gently brush down her waist, making the gathered pleats of
her dress ripple under his touch.
If Poe asked Rey if she was proud of him, she wouldn’t hesitate to say yes. She was proud of him and of Finn too. No one would be able to take her away from them. That she was sure of and she would fight until her dying breath for that. They had her heart and nothing would tear them apart. What they should be focusing on, should be spending the evening together.
With Finn adjusting his stance, she pressed the heel of her palm lightly and slowly against his cock. She was trying to work him up in the same fashion that he was making her shudder with anticipation. Rey would do what she could to make the evening special for the three of them.
“We’ll get through this..” she murmured, comforting Finn while pressing another hot kiss to Poe’s neck.
“But you are denying me, my Lord...” Rey murmured in sultry tones, stroking Poe's ego just a touch.
“Your garments are still on, as are mine and Finn’s. You are denying me—denying us, the sweet pleasure of your skin on ours.”
Well-... Finn smiled, breathing a quiet laugh even as his hips rocked gently into her hand.
"Allow me, then," he muttered, starting to pepper kisses behind Rey's neck as his deft fingers made short work of the simple fastenings of Rey's dress. The garment began to pool along her chest, and Finn slowly roved his hands over her to let it fall a few more inches at a time.
It probably wouldn't last like this, but moving so slowly was helping him to concentrate more on the moment than his fears. Fear was still quite a new thing for him to experience but oh had he learned to experience it since falling in love.
"See, now I know you're trying to butter me up and distract me," He said wryly, the smirk pulling at the edge of his lips.
It was working, though.
"What if I feel like denying you?" He teased, watching the fabric gently fall from her shoulders, watch it pool over her chest. He tugged the fabric - just a little bit - so that it fell and folded at her waist, completely baring her breasts. He didn't touch his own clothes, though, and he didn't touch Finn's.
"What if I feel like worshipping your form until you can't bare to do anything except strip me yourself?" He glanced across her face at Finn, his eyes twinkling, as if there were no darkness left in their depths. But there was. There always was. Especially now.
If he could extend the evening as long as possible, however, then maybe he could win something back from fate.
If he could give her every pleasure she could possibly know before finally succumbing himself? Then he could keep this up a very long time.
Oh Finn could be both devious and brilliant at times. Rey was trying to tease Poe for the both of them, yet her other half decided to tease her as well. Not complaining, but also not playing fair. She thought he was on her side as she wanted to offer herself to both gods. But no, the tables were turned and she'd have to remember to get both of them back later.
Her breasts were displayed for Poe. Perfect handfuls for him and Finn to grab and suck. Hills that they've climbed and explored countless times. Her nipples hardening from her own excitement, try as she might to hide it on her face.
"Why would you be that cruel to your wife?" Rey teased back, continuing to stroke Finn, even grabbing a handful of the fabric of his chiton to push up, trying to feel more of him in her hand.
"You would drive your poor wife, the both of you, until she is mad with pleasure and unable to do anything?" A rhetorical question as they had spent countless days and nights in their bed doing just that. Driving each other mad with pleasure to the point where they all succumbed to exhaustion at some point.
Another kiss, this one under his jaw at the soft skin there. Sucking softly and ending with a brush of her teeth, on the verge of leaving a mark but not quite. He did like to play rough, as did she.
"Is there nothing I can do to change your mind, Poe?"

There was no way Poe was going to be able to completely turn his mind away from where it had been brooding all day, but if anything, that made him want to indulge more rather than less. He trusted her to be able to defend herself - she was stronger than he was, in many ways, despite what others might assume from the outside. She was often stronger than he and Finn put together. But Poe didn't deal with being on the outside of a plan very well. He didn't like being told to sit back. So even though she had every right to deal with this herself - he couldn't stand the thought of not doing anything. But maybe he and Finn would be able to find whoever was plotting against them.
Maybe then he'd make her proud.
He pressed his body to her other side, threading an arm around her waist and letting his fingers catch the rope that held up Finn's chiton.
"You know I'd never deny you," He rumbled lowly, almost in her ear, before letting his hand gently brush down her waist, making the gathered pleats of her dress ripple under his touch.
