Rey turned slightly to face Finn a little more. She listened to him, letting him complete his thoughts, and to her it wasn't rambling. Rather, he was exploring other things that she had yet to hear another God speak about.
"It does. Some of them do value their time, because of how short it is. Others don't, be it to greed and other reasons that are more selfish." But, he saw mortals almost on the same level as her; beings who were flawed, and not perfect by any means, but would Zeus ever say such a thing? Only if he were guilty of something, sure. Beyond that? No.
"Exactly! They're here to serve us, as much as we should serve them. There is a balance to it--but we can't be involved too much because their choices must be their own in order for them to craft their own fate..." and now she was starting to feel a bit self-conscious about speaking her own opinions to someone of a 'higher' status than her. She averted her gaze for a moment, reigning herself back in.
"It's not often I come across another who has similar views. It's.....it's quite nice." Heck, it was nice to speak to someone and simply be herself. But, if she indulged too much....oh for Olympus' sake. If Demeter had an issue with her talking to someone else for this long, then that would be a foolish thing to be upset over.
Finn wasn't like the others she heard about; mortal or god. He wasn't here to trick her, or tempt her. He was....different. A good kind of different.
Finn nods feverishly at the bit about humans crafting their own fates. "They're alive like us. They should be allowed to be like us, to live free." It was a responsibility, he realized, to not interact. That made sense.
But then he was smiling and laughing a little, turning around on the branch to put his back to the trunk and face Rey. "I know what you mean. I don't talk to the others too often but they don't have these same perspectives anyway. I'd much rather talk with you."
Oh. His face grew a little hot there. Poe had been his lover for so long that he sort of forgot how to smooth around other people with the intention to impress. The only person he'd ever wanted to impress was Poe. Now Rey was here and-...
Was he doing something bad here? Would Poe not like this? Was it wrong to enjoy someone else's company, someone else's smile this much? Well, he'd just have to bring it up later. It's not like Finn didn't want her to meet Poe because he most certainly did.
"I-... Hmm... If I came to see you again, would that be okay? Would I be interrupting your work?" He didn't want to leave right now, though. In fact, he wanted to stay for quite a while longer.
Mortals should be allowed to live as freely as they could. However, how that freedom is acquired, or how long it lasts wasn't up to them. The Gods, in her opinion, were there to protect and to guide. They weren't there to rule all the time, least that was something Zeus had said and no one told her otherwise.
Rey's heart thumped a little louder in her chest hearing how Finn would rather talk with her than the others. It....it was nice. Compliments were so rarely given to her, she didn't know how to receive them. Or, how to react. So, instead of bowing her head shyly, she smiled brightly.
"The feeling is mutual." To talk to another, someone who agreed with her. Someone as kind as Rey thought they were...and handsome. But, she wouldn't dwell much on that for long.
Confusion and surprise danced along for her features for a brief moment, trying to process his words. Would he want to visit next season? That should be fine--because in her mind, that's how often she received other visits from Artemis or Demeter. Once a season, that was it.
"You wouldn't be interrupting my work. If you have the time to spare, I wouldn't mind." As long as Zeus or Demeter didn't throw a fit over it.
"As long as your other half doesn't mind. I wouldn't want him to think I'm distracting you, or anything."
Finn melted a bit in the face of that beaming smile. The similarities between his feelings for Rey and feelings for Poe were really starting to pile up to the point of being overwhelming. He liked it, though. He liked having yet another person to show him such beautiful smiles.
He had to get Poe to meet her.
"Thank you. I don't think he'd mind, though. I think he'd love to meet you. As far as my work-" Because what else could she distract him from? Even Rey's smile couldn't distract him from Poe, that's for sure, but neither could Poe distract him from Rey at this early point. "-it can get very busy sometimes, admittedly. I can't shirk that duty but time works a bit differently in the Underworld. I'm not worried about distractions."
"Meet me?" Rey shook her head. No, meeting one side of Hades was more than enough. She wasn't worth more than that, right? She had yet to find a calling that would satisfy Demeter. If she couldn't satisfy her own mother, what sort of value did she have? Not enough to meet Finn's other half. Not enough to make a good impression anyway.
"I don't think that would be a good idea. I mean, he has other things to do--like you. Both of you have important roles." Whereas she....didn't? Making pretty things was one thing, but it was a battle she was still wagging with Demeter.
"Besides, do you think it's wise to introduce your other half to someone you barely know?" Even if it felt like they had known each other for a while. A strong sense of familiarity, and how easily they fell in step with one another.
"Mm, I'd imagine time would work differently there--it's the same on Olympus, or so I've heard." Where time could pass by slowly, or quickly, depending upon the whim of whoever. Where mortals were governed by days, years, it was nothing to their immortal lives. The few times she had been on Olympus time felt the same to her. Then again it was for a brief meeting...more or less.
His head tilted to the side in confusion, smile falling a bit. "We all have important roles to play. I think he'd love to meet you, no matter how long you and I have known each other." But she didn't seem to want to meet Poe, so he wasn't going to push it. "I understand, though. Maybe some other time."
Didn't mean that he was very happy about it. Rather, he was a little put down now. Perhaps after they knew each other better, she'd want to meet him.
Anyway, Finn nods. "It sort of works like that. Hades controls everything in the Underworld. There's just surprisingly little there to control that's... any fun. It seems like most of what we do is what's necessary." Except enjoying each other. That was just for them.
Rey would had to have been blind to see that smile falter. She didn’t know why he’d want to introduce her to his other half. Honestly, she wasn’t that important. She was a young goddess who didn’t have a mass following, and trying to prove herself. Years of being on her own made her slightly question if it was worth it. If Demeter didn’t bother....or seemingly didn’t bother, then why would anyone else? Even Artemis kept her distance after a while.
“If you’re sure he wouldn’t mind....I would be open to it.” She’ll give in, if only slightly. Enough to make Finn smile because it was a sight she wanted to keep seeing.
“Mmm, and I can only imagine how mundane that would feel after a few centuries.” Because heaven knows how long it takes for Zeus to stick to his own job before something pretty caught his attention.
She reached out for one of the branches close to them, gingerly picking the leaves and flowers off. New leaves and flower buds quickly took their place. Soft blue flowers and light green leaves she absently wound together to make a crown. Something from her time with the nymphs.
“If...you wanted something more lively and entertaining, couldn’t you....maybe have a creature or two around for company?” She asked, finishing off the ends of the crown and held it out to him.
“I think the might fit your head. If you want it...”
Oh! His smile returned but it was far more tentative than before even if hope sprung to his eyes. "He wouldn't mind. He'd love you... Ah, to meet you. He'd love to meet you." Just as much as Finn loved meeting her so far. If only he could not embarrass himself so much.
He awkwardly laughed, looking away and kicking his feet when she spoke again. "Ah, Poe has a dog. We nicknamed him BB. He's really sweet when he wants to be. Super spoiled. He, ah-... Oh."
Finn stared down at the crown in her hands, eyes wide with a streak of innocence he hadn't felt in a long time. "For me? I- I'd love it. Thank you." He gingerly took it from her and tried to place it on his head. "Like this?" It was mostly right.
Would he though? Like to meet her outside of a request from Finn? Rey didn’t know, but it was sweet how he stumbled over himself. Just a tiny bit, but nothing she would tease him for. Instead of focusing on his choice of words, she opted to taking in the sight of him with a flower crown. He looked handsome, ethereal even....and like climbing a tree, he hadn’t worn a crown like hers before.
“Ahh, almost. Here...” she scooted towards him a little, reaching out to help place the crown just right, so the flowers rested in his dark hair rather than sticking up. Her touch seemed to make the flowers bloom further, displaying richer colors that suited Finn.
“Better. I’m sorry I don’t have a mirror but...the color suites you.” Her fingertips brushed along his cheek for a moment, but she felt something. A spark perhaps but nothing she could really say..
“A dog, you say? I thought you had a different one? Cerberus?”
... Finn found himself a little stunned for a long moment. He'd felt that spark, too, something very familiar yet completely foreign given the source. He never thought he could feel something like that from anyone else.
He had to tell Poe. It was the only thought in his head through most of this conversation.
Then he realized she said something and jolted a little. "Oh, yes. Yes, Cerberus. That's his real name. Poe's taken to some little nicknames now and then. BB likes them. He likes just about everything."
His hand reached up to lightly touch one of the flowers. "Thank you."
“You’re welcome...” Rey tilted her head slightly with slight confusion in her earthy gaze. She did notice how quiet and pensive Finn became after she had touched him. Albeit, briefly. But at least she learned something new; Cerberus was spoiled, and the other half of Hades was named Poe.
“Are you alright?” She asked, wondering if it had been wrong to touch him or if the flowers were too much.
"I'm okay, I'm great-" He was already rushing to reassure her before he could really process the question.
But he eventually did after a beat and sort of wilted a little, an embarrassed smile on his face. "Well... Would you believe me if I said I was a little nervous? I don't meet many people, especially anyone like you. But I'm okay. I just-... I overthink sometimes."
"Anyone like me?" More confusion, but it made her heart beat a little faster and she wanted to follow that further. But...she didn't want to pry? It was his business, and honestly, maybe it was better if she didn't know? But why would he be nervous? There wasn't anything threatening about her....that she had on her anyway.
"I believe you a little about being nervous, but you approached me and asked who I was, even when I was ready to defend myself you held your ground. Maybe brave....maybe foolish, but I didn't sense any nervousness from you."
Brave in meeting her, or foolish for daring to approach her. Hit or miss.
"I get it though....over thinking. It's sometimes hard not to do when you have a lot of time on your hands." Or, when you're alone....and trying to please someone else.
"Smart and wise and cares about the mortals. You care about what you do, wanting to get better." And beautiful. "And I find you very easy to talk to. All of those things are rare."
But she was right. His nerves were just him being silly at this point. Though he was nervous for his life... All he wanted was to make a good impression. Perhaps he'd already succeeded?
"Those like us have a lot of time... I'm lucky to have Poe nearby. Do you have anyone? To keep from thinking too much?"
Finn’s words were almost sweet enough to draw the flowers back and shyly close their petals. For Rey, it was enough for her to avert her gaze and not hide her face. What was this feeling blooming in her chest? Something that made her heart beat faster like the wings of a butterfly and ready to take flight?
“You’re easy to talk too as well...and fun to talk to.” And handsome, and kind and easy going. He didn’t seem to fret as much about things as Rey sometimes did, albeit she internalized it. Funny, she rarely heard praise for her abilities, or if she did, it came from the mortals the other Gods so easily dismissed. With Finn...she existed, was seen and no expectations to live up to.
There was a shake of her head.
“Not really. I spend time with the nymphs, or with Artemis, but I’m mostly by myself. Learning...trying to hone my talent.” And try to live up to the expectations Demeter had for her.
“I think it’s in preparation for...something Demeter has in store for me. I don’t know, but there’s a reason why she does things...” or she liked to think there was a reason. It gave her hope.
Finn was a little worried when the flowers seemed to draw in on themselves but a smile peeked through when she sent along her own compliments. Fun to talk to. He liked that.
"Really?" he asked regarding Demeter. Finn didn't know her so well as to assume she was or wasn't scheming things but he shrugged. "Whatever it is she has in store, I think you're already amazing at what you do. And you should do what you like. You're one of us, after all."
Fun to talk to....to be around, and to be close to? Was it possible to feel such things after one meeting? It was confusing but....exciting? Or maybe another moment where she was over thinking things. The flowers began to open their petals again, feeling more comfortable in Finn’s presence, taking their cues from their mistress.
“I would like to think so. She’s...” how could Rey put it without giving much away? “She has her reasons. At least from what Artemis has told me.”
Another clue that mother and daughter weren’t close, if Rey had to hear things from another goddess.
“I suppose. I can’t claim to be a goddess when not many know who I am, but it doesn’t bother me.” A shrug of her shoulders. “But....thank you. If you ever need something to brighten the Underworld a little....I could give you more flowers or maybe a tree, if you want.”
"Of course you're a goddess, whether they know of you or not." To say otherwise was preposterous to Finn, which is why he jumped in there so quickly. It wasn't right for anyone to put down Rey. Even herself.
Though he did catch the bit that Rey must not see Demeter very often at all, Finn didn't react and tucked the information into the back of his mind for later. For now, he was preoccupied with being awed by a gift again, a complete shift from his protective attitude just a moment ago.
"Is that possible? Do you think something like that could thrive in the Underworld?" Probably, if he and Poe wanted it to, but they had never tried something like this before. "I would love that. I- I would very much appreciate it. Poe would love it, too. I know he would."
It did strike her as odd that Finn would defend her so quickly about her status as a goddess. Then again, not too many people have defended her. So this was a new experience and Finn was making quite a name for himself in her eyes.
“I could try? As long as the soil or ground is healthy enough, it should work.” Death and decay could lend itself to enriching soil and providing food for the plants. It all depended upon if they could take care of it—water and some sunlight, if possible. That might require her going into the Underworld but....only for a little bit. Surely no harm would come of it.
Though, her more rationale side became a bit louder her, warning her Demeter would not approve. So she would have to figure something else.
“We could start off with something small to test it out and see what happens.” Hopefully it would work....if it got Finn to smile and be happy...that’s what she would like.
His smile was slow and tentative but also pretty bright once he really started picturing it. Life in the Underworld. It would beautiful. And she was right about their rich soil. They had plenty of riches in all aspects except for the living. Poe and BB kept Finn pretty warm, that's true, but it wasn't the same as greenery and life spreading beneath his fingers like it could on the surface.
"That sounds amazing," he murmured wistfully. "I-... Yes. If I can help you test, I'd love to try. You shouldn't have any problems with the soil."
There it was. The smile she was quickly falling for, whether she knew it or not. A smile she would come to love and cherish, along with another’s. Her own smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
“I can give you something small now and work on crafting other plants that you may like—something with a lot of color?” Something with blues and purples. Maybe reds or yellows to change things up and bring some life there.
“I could start on it tomorrow and have something for you when you next visit.” Which, in her mind meant the next season...because who would want to visit her again so soon?
sorry it's been so long and you get something so short D:
"I thought I might, yes. Only if that's okay with you, though. Whenever you like." The last thing he wanted to be was clingy and scare her away. Poe had never complained before but one never knew.
“N-no..” ahh, how could she put this without sounding childish?
“I didn’t think you’d want to visit again, so soon.” Or be worth the trouble of it. He was Hades, he had a role to play in this world whereas Rey was still young and trying to carve her own existence more or less....or at least live up to Demeter’s expectations.
“It’s more than fine with me,” she reassured him, her smile returning to her face.

"It does. Some of them do value their time, because of how short it is. Others don't, be it to greed and other reasons that are more selfish."
