Unfortunately, Poe was not calm. Not yet. He was still rankled by the injustice that Rey was forced to suffer.
"I meant it, when I said you don't have to do anything. You aren't beholden to us for anything, Rey. Whatever you want, we'll give to you. Whatever you don't, we won't."
Would he flirt and tease as soon as he was feeling better? ... Yeah, probably. But at the moment, her safety was the most important thing to him.
Rey's blush grew slightly thanks to Finn's reply. He loved kissing. Kissing was fine. Kissing was more than enough, and maybe within six months, they could become more intimate. Be it emotionally or physically...and she didn't want to think beyond those six months. What would come next would only break her heart.
As for Poe, she found herself nodding at him, squeezing him just a bit more tightly.
"I know, I just wanted to let you know...that's all." Yes, she was still a virgin--something Demeter really wanted for her, but not something Rey really thought about until Poe and Finn came along.
"I didn't want there to be pressure or anything. Even an evening in the garden would be more than enough for me." Hell, it would be the most company she's had in ages.
But...a ceremony?
"You mean...write vows and exchange them? That sort of ceremony?"
"I already wrote mine," Poe admitted, a little solemnly. Finn's budding happiness was pressing at his heart like the ocean gently lapping on the shore, so he was calming down, if slowly. But it would take him far longer to truly be at ease. The fact that Rey was a virgin barely even occurred to him - though he'd likely find it a much larger struggle, later. It was easy to set aside other things when one was so focused on injustice.
"But I can't give what I intended to promise," He murmured, turning his head to Rey. "I can't guarantee freedom, as much I want to. At least not for more than six months out of the year. But anything else you wish to ask of me," And here he looked to Finn, as well, "Tell me. And I'll swear to it."
Rey found herself tilting her head slightly into Finn’s touch. She turned her head a little more to press a kiss to his palm. The atmosphere was becoming lighter, but there was still a sense of dread. Six months would be gone in the blink of an eye to them.
“That’s okay. You and Finn have done more for me than....” she paused for a moment, the gravity of it hitting her again. “Than anyone else.”
But if they were going to do vows, they should do it right...
“Maybe we could have time to write our vows? Just a little...?’ And give her enough time to spruce up the garden and make it better. Make it to look like a damn fairy tale because it’s what they all deserved.
"I have nothing more I could possibly ask for." Or, at least, not ask Poe for.
Finn held his two lovers tight again, willing this looming doom to leave them in peace. There was nothing more they could do about it now. All he wanted was to see their smiles before their time together was cut short.
They could handle Demeter later.
"I'd like that, too," he agreed, smirking to Poe and trying to joke. "Not all of us are natural poets, you know."
"'Poet' might be putting a little bit of a point on it," he said ruefully. He was hardly a poet. He just... felt very strongly about things. So vows were something that came naturally. Didn't mean they were pretty.
"Whatever time you need," he murmured. He could feel how hard Finn was trying to banish his mood, and he wished he could just do it for him. Unfortunately, it wasn't likely. He needed time to cool off.
And then probably get riled up again.
Oh well.
"I think... I will want to make some changes to the palace, though," He mused.
Poe really did seem like a poet if he already wrote vows. Plus, the difference between Poe and a poet were a few lines. Not much of a difference in her eyes. Besides, he could express himself using language better than she could. Rey was more reserved, and expressed her thanks in her actions, or her gifts...
Which was why writing vows would be hard. So very hard.
"Like what?" Rey asked, continuing to hold each man, tilting her head in curiosity at Poe.
She was listening, but also thinking about what else she'd want to do to the garden--something to help make the occasion more memorable for them. More sweetness than bitterness.
Finn liked this slow turn of events, though he never really thought that the foul mood would leave them quickly. He would have to take time later to let himself feel this, too, but if only he could take the pain from his lovers.
He pecked a kiss to Poe's temple, though his mind was a bit lost in thought now that they were trying to find things to preoccupy themselves. "It would take forever to say everything I'd like, but summing things up shouldn't be difficult," he answered with a smile he tried to give honestly. There was still so much grief to deal with...
"I already think your redesigns are a good idea." More space for Rey. More space for them.
“We have time. Don’t have to say it all at once,” he murmured to Finn, though he couldn’t help giving the other god a soft smile. He turned his head to Rey.
“Build you some proper quarters. Connected to ours. Something separate, something shared. And a balcony to open onto your garden.”
He’d never really bothered with balconies before. But now they would have something to see.
"Our garden," she gently corrected. Not Poe's or Finn's, but their's. Something she created initially for the pair, but it was something for all of them to enjoy. Though, she was starting to feel guilty for Poe's idea.
"What you have built me is more than enough. It's four walls, and a bed. There's nothing else I really need." Never mind the fact she had slept in less. Sometimes in trees, sometimes with the Amazons out in various fields...or a cave.
All done to show she was strong, and able to hold her own. That wouldn't be the case for the next six months.
Whether Poe made the offer to get some exertion out or not, Finn definitely wanted to dote on Rey, too. In fact, he should get her a wedding gift. If only he knew what to get her- to get both of them...
"I'll say it every day," he told Poe idly, but let the two of them discuss this redesign without his input for now.
His heart squeezed with warmth, his grip on Finn tightening even as he was paying careful attention to Rey.
“If we’re doing this, we’re doing it as equals,” he said, his voice a little firm. “It’s not about what you need. It’s what you deserve. What we all deserve.”
If Finn breathed a word to Rey that he was thinking of getting her and Poe wedding gifts, she wouldn't know what to do. She wouldn't know what other gifts to Finn and Poe. They had already given her so much, anything else would have her reaching for the stars to give to them.
And of course, she'd have to figure out how to reach up and grab said stars from the sky--but one thing at a time.
Her hold on Poe lessened, but her hold on Finn tightened. She was pulling back slightly, if only to lean into Finn a little more. She opened her mouth to retort to Poe, but closed it a second later, trying to gather her thoughts again. She didn't want this to turn into a tiff.
"What I need and deserve....are they not the same things?" Rey asked in softer tones, trying to persuade Poe without really trying? Ah, she was bad at this. Her gaze flickered back to Finn.
"What do you think?" About redesign--about her having more space? She didn't need more space!
Finn looked to her when she drifted away from Poe, curious about what was wrong. Was she this afraid of getting things? Was she this nervous?
And now she was asking his opinion, and his brow furrowed in thought.
"Poe's right that you deserve everything. You deserve so much more than what you've been given in this life. We will give you everything you need, that's not put to question, but we'll also give you what you want, anything you want. If you want more room, it's yours. If you don't, then... you don't."
At that, his eyes flicked over to Poe, a little apologetic. He wanted Rey to have her own space as well, but he didn't want her to feel bad for it. Perhaps in time she'd let them give more.
“No, they aren’t,” Poe said, a small frown flickering to his lips as he felt her grip on him loosen. He wasn’t sure what he’d done wrong, and Finn’s words didn’t illuminate it for him. “Your needs are far, far less than what you deserve.”
The frown flickered deeper, his own grip loosening.
“I- I want us to be equals. I can’t offer you your freedom but if I were to- you can’t expect me to give you lesser—“
Finn's words calmed her guilt a little. They wanted to give her what they thought she deserved, not what she thought, which would be very little. It was such a hard thing to adjust to. She nodded her head at him, trying to take in those words and have them stick in her head.
Poe though, her eyebrows were knitted together in concern.
"You gave me a choice," Rey began, her hand moving from holding him to brushing her fingers against his cheek. The frown on his face...he had done enough of that for today. She had pulled back a little, not because he was giving her too much, but she was still new to this relationship. She didn't want Finn to feel left out by her.
"Stay or go back, you gave me a choice rather than dictate what I would do next. Giving me a choice is a step towards freedom." Something she would continue to fight until Demeter got it through her thick head that she was her own person. And Rey would have to grapple with the idea that she deserved things too.
Her look of concern gave way to an apologetic one, with her guilt on her the rise.
"When you're used to having less, anything greater what you have is....it's hard, Poe. And I think it's too much because..." she believed she was lesser, but she didn't want to breathe those words into existence. "I'm trying to overcome that....I just need you and Finn to...reassure me it's okay."
It's okay for her to have more, to want more without feeling guilty for it.
"It's okay. It's more than okay." His hand tightened on Rey, wishing he could just have her understand.
"You're the Queen of the Underworld. You're our Queen. Anything you ask of us, it's okay."
They had a lot of work to do, clearly. Rey needed to be pampered and spoiled, deserved as much. She needed to know her worth and how much she meant to them. But in only six months? Demeter may try to undo every good thing they tried to make her understand.
Finn was worried, wishing the gods would listen to what Rey wanted from her life rather than resort to all of this.
He let out a hard breath, but it was hard to argue when she was looking at him like that, her fingers against his cheek. He felt a small, uncurling desire to kiss her again, but... Not the time, Poe. You can't kiss her every time she looks at you like that.
Finn's words made something flutter in his chest. Our Queen. As if everything felt a little more real, suddenly.
"I won't do anything you don't want me to do," he offered finally. "But if you want smaller rooms, then I'm doing it for all of us. Whatever you desire, Rey. It's all okay. The Underworld is a space solely for us." His arms slipped a little more firmly around them both.
"This is our domain. We will carve it as we wish."
The words echoed in Rey's mind, making it feel all the more real. In the matter of hours, she had gone from a lesser known goddess to Queen of the Underworld. Queen to Hades--to Finn and Poe. It would hit her later, the gravity of it, but her focus was on her husbands.
Funny, she could vaguely sense Finn's worry, echoing in her heart. Whereas for Poe...her eyes drifted down to his lips for a brief moment. The faint whisper of desire curling in the bottom of her stomach. Kissing him and then Finn wouldn't solve anything, or maybe it would? No, focus.
"I-it wouldn't have to be smaller," she began, fumbling over her words as she tried to reign in her emotions, differing them from what she felt from the pair.
"Noting....big? Or too big? I don't know. I honestly wouldn't know to do with that much space." If she would even have a big enough bed, or anything else. Her hand drifted from Poe's cheek back to his side, holding him in turn.
"Baby steps," Finn agreed with a little smile. Something was better than nothing, after all. "You should have input on the design, anyway. Right, Poe?" he asked, looking to his first love.
That would be a sight to behold. Both of them were artists, Poe creating their beautiful palace and Rey creating beautiful new forms of life. He would have to see some sort of collaboration.
"We can take our time." Just... not too much time.
