"I'll raise a whole damn army if I have to," Poe muttered, mostly to himself. It was an empty threat, and he knew it. He'd caved when Demeter had put the humans at risk. He'd thought himself stronger than that, but he couldn't let her condemn them to death. He'd have to figure something else out.
The armour flaked off him, falling like dry, crisp leaves, until he was only in his usual chiton. He couldn't look at Rey while she cried. Couldn't face how fully he'd disappointed her.
He should just leave them, for a while. Finn was always better at this kind of thing than he was. Comfort was worth so much more than useless, unenforceable judgement. He started stepping away, leaving them to their embrace.
No, no, she wouldn't risk more lives than her own. As badly as she wanted justice, and her blood was singing that she should, she couldn't leave Finn's embrace. She couldn't put what they had, as strained as it was, at stake. She wasn't disappointed in Poe, or in Finn. She was disappointed in Zeus, in Hera, and the Fates themselves for letting Demeter do this.
For pushing them into this corner and expecting them to simply cave. They wouldn't. They would figure something out.
In the mean time, Rey hugged Finn back, shifting slightly so her head could rest on her shoulder. She saw Poe turn to walk away from them, and that didn't settle with her either.
"I need you too...please.." she murmured loud enough for him to hear while holding Finn. If they were going to make this work, they would need to be there for each other, and Rey...she needed both men.
"It's not...it's not either of your faults. I'm wish I was stronger to have stood up to her sooner..."
"You were strong to endure her," Finn mumbled into her hair, trying to find reassurances where he could.
His eyes were on Poe, though, walking away from them likely to stew in his own anger and sadness. "Don't go," he called out softer than Rey, not wanting any of them to be alone for even a moment right now. "They want to split us apart."
He was angry enough that he almost resisted it. That his own desire to stoke his rage and fume on his own almost outstripped his need to be close. But in the end, he could not deny them. Either of them. And after several long seconds where he held in place, unable to move forward, he finally tuned back towards them, eyes lowered and brows knit.
"Sorry," He murmured to them both. "I'm right here."
Tonight was supposed to be joyous. Tonight, they should have been exchanging their wedding vows. He'd even already wrote his. I promise you freedom and all the happiness its in my power to bring you. Except obviously he'd managed neither.
Tonight was supposed to be a joyous one, where they could make so many memories to rewrite the ones Rey had. She hadn't time to think of vows, too busy working on bringing as much life as she could into their garden. A place for them to come together and simply be.
She took in Finn's reassuring words, hugging him tighter for a moment. Her eyes didn't leave Poe's form, begging him to come back to them. He needed this as much as she did. All of them needed to be close. They had something special and the rest of them wanted to tear it apart.
Fuck it, if he wasn't coming to them, she would.
Rey dried her eyes, and pulled away from Finn. She didn't completely break contact though. Her hand stayed in his, and she made both of them bridge the distance to Poe and promptly held him too.
She didn't know if she was as calming or soothing as Finn, but damnit, she needed to hold Poe too.
It didn't take much urging for Finn to follow if any. He was already there to wrap his arms around Poe and Rey as soon as she embraced him.
He hadn't written any vows either. Hadn't even thought about it in the haze of happiness he'd been in. He could at least mourn their night together, feeling it ruined already, just like the others wanted.
"We still have six months for now. We can find happiness in that time. I know it." Otherwise, what was the point? They shouldn't be miserable for all this time they had together.
and then I did fall asleep and had class this morning lol
There was no way of describing the relief that flooded him, when both pairs of arms circled tight around him. His heart thumped, a deep longing, and he ducked his head to bury it against Rey’s throat, an arm looping tightly around Finn’s waist and pulling him in tightly.
“I already found my happiness,” he mumbled against Rey’s neck, his grip on them both tightening. He pressed a kiss against her skin, his fingers tight in Finn’s clothes.
“But damn if I don’t want to throw Zeus and Demeter in a river for trying to keep it from me.”
Relief mingled with sadness flooded her. The three of them embracing and holding onto each other. They needed this, a moment to simply be and hold one another. Touch was so important, helping to establish those memories and feel like she belonged to something.
Rey didn’t realize how badly she needed to be held until Poe and Finn entered her life. They wouldn’t deny her for a hand to hold or arms for her to embrace.
The kisses seemed to have strengthen the bond developing between them. A strong current of energy weaving through them.
“I’m more inclined to lock both of them up...” Rey murmured, trying to picture both gods bound in chains...but it was just a thought.
“We’ll make the most of this and figure things out. We’ll be okay...we ha e each other.”
"Our wedding night, huh." He mumbled it, a little bitter. It was not the sort of wedding night he would have pictured.
But...
"We should have a proper one. Tomorrow." He pulled back a little, just so he could actually glance at each of them in turn. "It doesn't have to involve anyone else. Just - just something for us."
Wedding night? Oh, yes. It was their wedding night wasn’t it? Though no vows were officially exchanged, they had all eaten a piece of the pomegranate. They were connected in a way. Though, Poe had a point. They could do something tomorrow.
“Yes, we should. Something for all of us...” ahh, but maybe she should set some expectations?
“I...I’ve never been intimate with anyone and I..” fuck was she blushing? Yes.
“I don’t know if I’m ready for anything beyond...kissing.”
Finn smiled warmly at Rey, even if his smile was small. He pressed another kiss to her hair, utterly charmed.
"I love kissing," he said in complete honesty. He would have continued with something like not trying to persuade or push her, but he knew that Poe was impatient. He wouldn't get angry, certainly, but he would flirt. Once he was calm again, he was going to flirt a lot.
Unfortunately, Poe was not calm. Not yet. He was still rankled by the injustice that Rey was forced to suffer.
"I meant it, when I said you don't have to do anything. You aren't beholden to us for anything, Rey. Whatever you want, we'll give to you. Whatever you don't, we won't."
Would he flirt and tease as soon as he was feeling better? ... Yeah, probably. But at the moment, her safety was the most important thing to him.
Rey's blush grew slightly thanks to Finn's reply. He loved kissing. Kissing was fine. Kissing was more than enough, and maybe within six months, they could become more intimate. Be it emotionally or physically...and she didn't want to think beyond those six months. What would come next would only break her heart.
As for Poe, she found herself nodding at him, squeezing him just a bit more tightly.
"I know, I just wanted to let you know...that's all." Yes, she was still a virgin--something Demeter really wanted for her, but not something Rey really thought about until Poe and Finn came along.
"I didn't want there to be pressure or anything. Even an evening in the garden would be more than enough for me." Hell, it would be the most company she's had in ages.
But...a ceremony?
"You mean...write vows and exchange them? That sort of ceremony?"
"I already wrote mine," Poe admitted, a little solemnly. Finn's budding happiness was pressing at his heart like the ocean gently lapping on the shore, so he was calming down, if slowly. But it would take him far longer to truly be at ease. The fact that Rey was a virgin barely even occurred to him - though he'd likely find it a much larger struggle, later. It was easy to set aside other things when one was so focused on injustice.
"But I can't give what I intended to promise," He murmured, turning his head to Rey. "I can't guarantee freedom, as much I want to. At least not for more than six months out of the year. But anything else you wish to ask of me," And here he looked to Finn, as well, "Tell me. And I'll swear to it."
Rey found herself tilting her head slightly into Finn’s touch. She turned her head a little more to press a kiss to his palm. The atmosphere was becoming lighter, but there was still a sense of dread. Six months would be gone in the blink of an eye to them.
“That’s okay. You and Finn have done more for me than....” she paused for a moment, the gravity of it hitting her again. “Than anyone else.”
But if they were going to do vows, they should do it right...
“Maybe we could have time to write our vows? Just a little...?’ And give her enough time to spruce up the garden and make it better. Make it to look like a damn fairy tale because it’s what they all deserved.
"I have nothing more I could possibly ask for." Or, at least, not ask Poe for.
Finn held his two lovers tight again, willing this looming doom to leave them in peace. There was nothing more they could do about it now. All he wanted was to see their smiles before their time together was cut short.
They could handle Demeter later.
"I'd like that, too," he agreed, smirking to Poe and trying to joke. "Not all of us are natural poets, you know."
"'Poet' might be putting a little bit of a point on it," he said ruefully. He was hardly a poet. He just... felt very strongly about things. So vows were something that came naturally. Didn't mean they were pretty.
"Whatever time you need," he murmured. He could feel how hard Finn was trying to banish his mood, and he wished he could just do it for him. Unfortunately, it wasn't likely. He needed time to cool off.
And then probably get riled up again.
Oh well.
"I think... I will want to make some changes to the palace, though," He mused.
Poe really did seem like a poet if he already wrote vows. Plus, the difference between Poe and a poet were a few lines. Not much of a difference in her eyes. Besides, he could express himself using language better than she could. Rey was more reserved, and expressed her thanks in her actions, or her gifts...
Which was why writing vows would be hard. So very hard.
"Like what?" Rey asked, continuing to hold each man, tilting her head in curiosity at Poe.
She was listening, but also thinking about what else she'd want to do to the garden--something to help make the occasion more memorable for them. More sweetness than bitterness.
Finn liked this slow turn of events, though he never really thought that the foul mood would leave them quickly. He would have to take time later to let himself feel this, too, but if only he could take the pain from his lovers.
He pecked a kiss to Poe's temple, though his mind was a bit lost in thought now that they were trying to find things to preoccupy themselves. "It would take forever to say everything I'd like, but summing things up shouldn't be difficult," he answered with a smile he tried to give honestly. There was still so much grief to deal with...
"I already think your redesigns are a good idea." More space for Rey. More space for them.
“We have time. Don’t have to say it all at once,” he murmured to Finn, though he couldn’t help giving the other god a soft smile. He turned his head to Rey.
“Build you some proper quarters. Connected to ours. Something separate, something shared. And a balcony to open onto your garden.”
He’d never really bothered with balconies before. But now they would have something to see.
"Our garden," she gently corrected. Not Poe's or Finn's, but their's. Something she created initially for the pair, but it was something for all of them to enjoy. Though, she was starting to feel guilty for Poe's idea.
"What you have built me is more than enough. It's four walls, and a bed. There's nothing else I really need." Never mind the fact she had slept in less. Sometimes in trees, sometimes with the Amazons out in various fields...or a cave.
All done to show she was strong, and able to hold her own. That wouldn't be the case for the next six months.
Whether Poe made the offer to get some exertion out or not, Finn definitely wanted to dote on Rey, too. In fact, he should get her a wedding gift. If only he knew what to get her- to get both of them...
"I'll say it every day," he told Poe idly, but let the two of them discuss this redesign without his input for now.
His heart squeezed with warmth, his grip on Finn tightening even as he was paying careful attention to Rey.
“If we’re doing this, we’re doing it as equals,” he said, his voice a little firm. “It’s not about what you need. It’s what you deserve. What we all deserve.”
