"I doubt they would take, without you," he murmured lowly, though watching her eyes light up made his pulse quicken.
It wouldn't be so bad, right? Having her around? She wouldn't owe them anything, but even just being here--
He reached out to touch the skin of the fruit, just barely accidentally grazing her fingers when he did it and feeling that same weird shock pierce right through him. Gods, is that what it was supposed to feel like? No wonder Zeus was so notorious. It was addictive...
"You could enjoy them too," he added after a minute, his voice a little quiet as he paused, coming to a stop. The hallway they were in was long and lined with dark stone, illuminated only by pale purple light that seemed to suffuse from nowhere.
"You could make anything you wanted, here. You could make the entire underworld bloom."
The lower murmur made her heart thump louder in her chest. Her cheeks started to feel warm, but she bit down on her tongue, using the pain to help her focus....her imagination or the stress of the day was making her feel things. Things that she shouldn't feel towards someone else--especially Poe. Or with Finn. They were two halves of the same, she couldn't--shouldn't have those feelings at all.
"I think they would...as long as you and Finn cared for them." Which she knew they would, without a doubt.
Their fingers brushing, lightly grazing over, causing sparks and jolts to dance along her spine. The same feeling as before, the same with Finn when she held his hand. So confusing, but she craved more of it. Fuck, she was going crazy, wasn't she?
"I suppose I could..." Rey murmured, coming to a stop with him. Her hand still holding the fruit, being so careful and gentle with it.
"Something that you and Finn would enjoy," Because they were the priority. Rey didn't think of herself, she thought of others and herself at the very last. That's just who she was.
She held the fruit back out to Poe. "Have you shown Finn? He'll be so excited and proud of you. I...I know I am."
"We can't bring the sun," he murmured. "You can make them grow without it. I don't even know how to give them what they need. And aging them the way I did... If I kept doing it, I would push the tree closer and closer to death, far faster than it ever should."
He knew the risk he'd taken.
He stepped closer, slowly sliding his hand over hers, pressing it close to the flesh of the fruit. Keeping it solidly in her hands.
"We can all share it," he agreed, "But I made it for you. I wanted - I wanted to show you what you've done for us. In some small way. I can't explain it. But there is life here now where there couldn't be life before. So it's yours. I hope - I hope there will be more fruit, for the three of us to taste together. But the first taste of this one is yours."
"I could figure something out..." maybe not bring the sun to the Underworld, but a way for the tree to continue to bear fruit, or have the seeds take root and give them more life. Something for them to enjoy, and maybe make things less...heavy around them.
The spark became stronger, like lightening passing between them, but she didn't pull away. No, it was a feeling she liked and wanted more of. But, she shouldn't want that. She shouldn't that with Poe, or have the same feelings with Finn. Did Poe know what he was doing? Or was this a cruel trick from the fates?
"I can try to give you more, fruit or trees that will bear fruit. I want you and Finn to be happy." Because they deserved it, honestly they did. Her eyes flitted down to the fruit in their hand, thumb brushing over the soft skin of the pomegranate.
"...I don't want to eat it. It's too precious of a gift, Poe." The nymphs had given her flowers to weave, or asked her to create things for them. This...had to be one of the few times she's received anything from anyone.
"It's yours, and it's meant to be eaten," He replied, that tiny uptick of a smile twitching at the edge of his lips. If he thought about it too deeply, he'd be mad again. But for some reason - for some reason, now, he was glad that it'd been him. He and Finn could shower her in gifts, and prove the rest of the world lesser for it.
He wanted to be special, in her eyes. And the feeling was both surprising and terrifying, but he couldn't pull his hand away again. He found his thumb tracing over the back of her hand like hers traced the pomegranate, pulling still closer as if gravity pulled him to her.
His pulse was racing but he was careful to keep his face as impassive as possible.
He needed to talk to her. That's what he was trying to do. He was trying to get to the part where he could tell her his plan. But he had to convince her to want to stay here, first.
"That's their loss," he murmured, his voice a low rumble. It wouldn't be audible if they weren't standing so close. "You've already given us much more than this. This is the barest trace I could manage to give back. I... I want to show you, that maybe what you do - maybe it would be as good down here as it is up there. Maybe you could make fruit just as sweet."
They were standing so close and if Rey took a step back, she might feel the wall behind her. The image of tilting her head up, ever so slightly and have Poe leaning in--!
No, no! She had to get rid of that thought before she got herself further into trouble. She couldn't do that to Finn. She wouldn't break his heart that way--and she had promised to do better with him. She didn't want to be someone who continued to hurt him. Then her mind shifted to the same position, but with Finn and...and it was all so confusing.
"Maybe....it's a strong possibility.." She could continue to create, and be free to do what she wanted to her heart's content. It was hard to say what would happen with Demeter. A fight was bound to break out, but she would hold her own. She wouldn't be pushed aside and she would fight for her place as a goddess in her own right. For now, the idea of staying in the Underworld...it was a charming one.
She pursed her lips slightly, looking pensive as she thought over his words.
"It's been nice...being here. Being able to do something and enjoy it with other people...with you and Finn. But I wouldn't want to over stay my welcome, with you or Finn."
It hadn't been quite how he'd been intending to ask, but he heard himself say it before he could stop. His hand curled around hers, squeezing tight against the fruit.
"Rey... I've wanted you to be here from the very moment I saw that smile on Finn's face. But I-- I want you to stay, too. For me. For yourself. We can give you sanctuary. I--" But he couldn't quite bring himself to tell her his plan. Because it suddenly felt very, very real.
He could picture it - her head raising ever so slightly, those wide eyes searching his--
His heart fluttered, and he swallowed.
"But it has to be your choice, and you can't choose without knowledge. So if the fruit is bad... Then maybe you'd know more than you did before. I need to know, too."
It felt as though the whole universe, that time and everything around her came to a halt. Poe and Finn wanted her to stay. They wanted her to make a choice, and to do so of her own free will, but they wanted her to stay. Words she always yearned to hear from her mother, spoken so freely by a god she barely knew, but whose hand felt so right against her own. Then there was Finn's smile that felt as bright as the sun itself.
They barely knew her, but they valued her so much. They were willing to give her shelter and had shown her more kindness in a few hours, or days, than she had experienced in her years of walking the mortal realm. Kindness that touched her to her very core, enough to make her eyes water, but she held back those tears.
Her brown eyes looked down at their hands holding the fruit. She didn't need the fruit to know it tasted sweet--that she wanted to stay, but actions were always louder than words.
It felt wrong withdraw her hands from his, but Rey brought the pomegranate to her mouth and bit into it. The juice of it staining her lips, but the flesh was tender, and the seeds were small, nothing to fret over. It tasted so sweet on her tongue, like honey or ambrosia.
Slowly, she lifted her head to stare into his eyes.
He couldn't even place the expression on her face, open and earnest with moisture building in her eyes, making them shine as she looked up at him.
He closed the gap before he knew what he was doing, his hand sliding around her waist, spreading against the small of her back as he pulled her in, his lips meeting hers tenderly, gently, but with full and clear intention. They parted against hers, tasting the juice on her lips, lightning racing between them.
He felt something shift in his chest - like a piece that had been out of alignment, slotting back into place.
He hadn't even realised the hole was there, until that sweet, simple kiss filled it.
The Underworld faded away from her mind once Poe leaned in, kissing her as she had imagined only minutes ago. She didn't resist him, only tilted her head further up just so her lips could be more aligned with his. Lips that were so soft, and perfect against her own.
His hand placed at the small of her back, and how well they fit together. Her eyes fell shut, causing those tears to slide down her face, but she didn't care.
It felt good, it felt as though she was finally part of something and it felt like...
It felt like home.
The piece of her that she had been trying to fill with love from her mother...it was barely there. The sadness and heaviness of it was nearly gone because of a simple kiss. Her first kiss, given to her by Poe--!!
Poe. Finn.
The realization came crashing down on her, making her pull back and realized how close to the wall she actually was. Panic started to set in with her, torn between slapping Poe for kissing her and running off to find Finn and apologize.
Hope was blooming so bright and hot in his chest that he was sure he could feel the echo of it in Finn, somewhere across the other side of the palace. He was always aware of his other half, and he knew Finn was aware of him. It didn't even occur to him, that Finn might be jealous, or wouldn't want him to do this. If Finn had kissed her first, he'd feel nothing but joy - and maybe yearning to join them.
But his heart felt so full, so centered, that he didn't even realise she was talking about Finn.
"Yes we should," he whispered, reading her panic for nervousness, his own heart drumming wildy. He raised his hands to cup both sides of her face, tilting it up towards him. "We should again. Stay, Rey. Stay--" And he leaned in again, pressing her back a little further so that a single step would have her pressed against the wall, aiming to steal another, deeper kiss--
Gods, how many nights did she yearn for her mother to tell her those words, to feel an ounce of pride from that woman, and yet it never came. With Poe, he was asking her to stay, asking her to stay because of whatever feelings he had for her, which shouldn't be the case.
And Zeus help her, she felt so weak against those words. Wanted nothing more than to have that mouth on hers again, and maybe taste him for a brief moment. But she could not do that to Finn. Couldn't let hurt him in this manner, the same way Zeus had hurt Hera time after time with his affairs.
She felt the heat of Poe's body against hers, enough to make her knees weak, but she had to be strong. She tried to pull further back, but her back was against the wall. Instead, her free hand moved, striking him across his cheek. The sound of her flesh hitting his echoed down the hall.
"No, Poe. Finn--you are Finn's other half and I..." made another mistake. Hurt Finn again.
"I need to tell him." And pray that he'd forgive her.
The slap echoed, pain blooming in his cheek. But the surprise was far sharper. Damn, when was the last time he'd felt pain?
He stepped back, pulling from her, the sting of rejection almost sharper than the sting of his cheek, but the confusion hit him hardest.
"Okay?" He said, a little dumbly. He wasn't sure what she needed to tell Finn, though something occurred to him, frustration digging into his chest. Did she not want them, if they were together? Because as much as he wanted her - and in those few seconds with her body pressed close he really, really wanted her - there was no way he could possibly leave Finn. This simply was never going to happen, if she expected something with just one of them. It was both, or not at all.
But he was too stunned to get the words out, and just took a step further back, holding his cheek and staring at her.
"He's in the garden, I think," He said, after reaching out for him. Trying to find just where he was, and he was being pulled in that direction.
"Okay?" Rey repeated, looking at Poe with just as much confusion. How was any of this okay?! He kissed her--and he should only be kissing Finn. And she shouldn't have kissed him, really she shouldn't. She shouldn't have had those feelings about Poe or about Finn...
And he was acting so calm about it?
"You just kissed me and you think that's okay?" Was Poe that thick headed? Did he see nothing wrong with what he did? Hurting Finn like that...she felt the urge to hit him again. Damnit, he had to share the similar passion and traits like Zeus, didn't he? A penchant for kissing women who weren't their spouse or lover.
"How could you do that to Finn? I thought you loved him!" Fuck it, she was turning away from him and heading to the garden and hoping that Finn would forgive her.
"You kissed me back," he pointed out. Had he gotten the signals completely wrong? She had to feel it, too, right? The perfect way their bodies slotted against each other...
"What? Of course I love him--" He started, but she was already stalking away. Damn it. He'd blown it.
"Let's talk to her first, Poe," he muttered to himself once she was out of ear shot. "This is what you get for not listening to him. Take it slowly, Poe--"
He started following after her, still rubbing his cheek where she'd slapped him. It hadn't lessened the yearning any less. She had an amazing arm...
And now she felt awful for having kissed him back. She had committed such a horrible act that Finn.....if he never forgave her, she would understand. She wasn't the type of person to just kiss someone else's lover...granted, she didn't want to stop kissing him, but she shouldn't have done it in the first place.
She was going to lose someone so precious because of a lapse in judgement.
"Finn!" she called out as they reached the garden, picking up her pace.
I return! everything's fine, just a power outage ♥
Finn knew that Poe had gone to talk to Rey about the plan they discussed. It had taken him a while to muster the words, it seemed, and Finn had wanted to go with him for this discussion. That is, right up until he felt all sorts of things radiating off of his lover.
What the hell was going on?
He snapped around when he heard Rey call his name. He'd been standing in the garden, trying to enjoy the scenery but mostly contemplating what Poe was up to. Now he was moving to meet Rey halfway. "Everything all right?" Had Poe botched the talk this badly?
Poe followed her, but not particularly quickly, mostly because he didn't want to get slapped again. But as she ran up to Finn, he could be seen walking up a few dozen feet behind her, rubbing his jaw and giving Finn an apologetic look.
Later, maybe they could laugh at this. It was a gap in communication, but Rey was upset over losing one friend and harming them, whereas she still wanted to yell at Poe for being so....stupid! The blame didn't fall solely on him, she had kissed Poe back and that would forever haunt her.
Spotting Finn, she picked up her pace until she was in front of him, looking upset. In her right hand she still had that pomegranate Poe had given her.
"I'm sorry," Rey blurted out once Finn was close enough.
"I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have kissed Poe. It was a lapse in judgement and I didn't want to hurt you. It won't happen again. I'm sorry, Finn." So many apologies left her lips, completely afraid she had lost someone precious to her.
"R-Rey, it's okay! It's all right." Though he did shoot Poe a look from over Rey's head since he'd managed to upset her. It wasn't like Finn could blame him much, though. he knew how excited his lover could get when there were good things to be had.
He held Rey loosely by her shoulders, looking back to her with gentleness... Though, he couldn't really help a little smile. This was kind of funny. "He was supposed to talk to you first. This may be better, though. We can all talk together. But you did nothing wrong. It's okay. Are you okay?"
Are they both okay? Why was Poe looking like he just got struck?
While Rey wasn't on the verge of tears, she was pretty upset over what happened. She wasn't like Zeus in any way, shape or form. She did not go after people who were in other relationships. She didn't lust after anyone--until now. Until with Poe and Finn, and the stress of it was making it hard for her to see things for what they were.
Which was why she was utterly confused by the little smile on Finn's face. Was this a reoccurring thing? Did Poe chase after others, showing them fruit and kissing them?
"I'm not okay, Poe kissed me and I kissed him back--and I won't do it again. I wouldn't betray your trust like that," she explained again, looking back at Poe then at Finn.
Would it sink in now?
"I slapped him...he was going to kiss me again, and I couldn't do that. I wouldn't--I didn't want to hurt you, Finn."
She slapped him. Finn had to work hard to secure his smile, trying not to make her feel laughed at. He was laughing at Poe, really, but that could wait. "You didn't betray me, Rey. You have nothing to apologize for."
He gently guided her closer to the tree, hoping to calm her down. "We spoke earlier and we-... We both like you. A lot. We wanted to- to talk, and I have no idea how to do it, but-" Okay, deep breath. "The important thing is that neither of you betrayed me. If you want to kiss each other, I'm okay with that. I'm more than okay with that. I would-... I mean, Iwouldalsoliketokissyou but what I'm saying is that we talked and we both like you and we wanted you to stay as more than a guest or a kidnapped victim and if that makes you uncomfortable then that's completely fair and we won't be mad but--"
It was a relief knowing Rey hadn't betrayed Finn. She was ready to apologize again, the words ready on her tongue, but Finn seemed...okay with everything? He seemed okay that Poe had kissed her and she had kissed him back, and did she...did she hear him? He wanted to kiss her too? The words were washing over her, but her brain couldn't keep up with what was happening.
Finn lead her to the tree she created for him and for Poe. And now she was feeling guilty for slapping Poe--it was all a big misunderstanding, one Rey couldn't completely wrap around.
"You want me to stay..." she repeated, taking one thing at a time. Her gaze moved from Poe to Finn. "And you're okay that I kissed Poe...and.." Pink rose to her cheeks. "And you want to kiss me too?"
Honestly, this was a lot to wrap her head around, and she couldn't fathom why they wanted to do this. Why they wanted to kiss her, or why she wanted to be kissed--and picturing how lovely it would be to be in between both of them, being held by them and having sweet kisses pressed to her skin--
Nope, now wasn't the time for that.
"I'm sorry, this....this is really hard to comprehend. I told Poe I wanted to stay--and he kissed me for it. I.." she brought her free hand up to push back some of the strands from her face.
"I don't understand why?" Or what they wanted to ask her, or if there was anything they wanted to ask her?

"I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have kissed Poe. It was a lapse in judgement and I didn't want to hurt you. It won't happen again. I'm sorry, Finn." So many apologies left her lips, completely afraid she had lost someone precious to her.

“I know you said slow but - look, there was no way I could have resisted the look on her face, just then. You wouldn’t have been able to, either.”
Well. Finn probably could - he was way less impulsive - but that wasn’t the point.

I would-... I mean, Iwouldalsoliketokissyou but what I'm saying is that we talked and we both like you and we wanted you to stay as more than a guest or a kidnapped victim and if that makes you uncomfortable then that's completely fair and we won't be mad but--"
Save him!

Is he saving Finn or making it worse? Probably the latter. He walked over to them and then leaned on the tree.
"When I asked you to stay I wasn't just asking for me. We both want you to stay, Rey."
