His roommate in question was the charitable, handsome, charming, sweet, brave, ridiculously funny Poe Dameron of questionable sexuality. It was practically an affront, really. Finn almost wanted to be offended by Poe's mere existence, but they had become the best of friends since they started bunking together, and there was nothing about him that Finn could possibly resent. He was lovely.
And extremely far out of Finn's league, it wasn't even funny. While Finn had distracted himself by wondering if Poe was attracted to men or not, it was pretty much just a distraction. Even if he was, Poe would never see him as more than a friend.
He took a deep breath, trying to pull his mind away from those kinds of thoughts, when Poe walked into the room. Finn shot up, textbook slapping him on the way but he managed to ignore it. "Oh, hey."
no subject
He'd been in Experimental Robotics all afternoon, which always put him in a good mood, and he didn't even think twice before walking over and flopping down on Finn's bed next to him, like he had absolutely no concept of personal space.
"How's the reading going?"
no subject
Reading! He picked up the textbook. "Ah, right. It's awful. Psychology really isn't for me, man. How was class?" Finn knew what class Poe had gotten out of it. He didn't know very much about it other than he loved it simply because Poe was always so happy when he got out.
no subject
"Sorry, man, Psychology really ain't my beat either, if I'm honest. Otherwise I'd offer to help." As it is, he's being 'helpful' by just sort of massaging Finn's scalp.
"Really good. Got all the locomotion worked out, the motor's in and runs real good. Hopefully by the end of the semester he'll be in a state where I can bring him home and you can meet him properly."
no subject
But then his eyes popped open. Wait, when had he closed them? Never mind. "He? Poe, did you name your robot?" He smiles, finding this man so endearing. Poe had already been talking about it like it was more than just a machine but now-
Well, who could blame Finn if he fell a little more?
no subject
"Yeah. Figured it was a little weird to just keep calling him 'the project', right? I named him Beebee."
If he shuffled a little closer so that Finn could lean in against him, who was going to complain?
no subject
"Beebee," he repeated with a happy laugh. "I like it. Any reason behind the name?"
no subject
"You'll like him, I think. I've been working on the AI in the meantime and he's going to be the cutest robot to ever exist or I'll eat my own socks."
no subject
"I can't imagine I wouldn't like him." Something Poe's built. How could he not like it? "I, uh- I don't really know how all this works, but- I mean, is he... awake yet?" Is that the right term for this? To Poe, probably.
no subject
He kept slowly massaging his scalp.
"Nah, nah. None of the onboard computing systems are functional yet, I'm still running all the locomotion tests from a cable connected to my laptop. I'm still programming him. But once I get it all ready to go, I'll load it up onto his onboard computer. I'm not the best programmer in the world, but Jess is helping me out with it."
Jessika Pava was one of Poe's closest friends, as Finn likely well knew. And she'd been a bit cold, at first, but she'd warmed up since. She and Poe were often thick as thieves.
"Though I don't actually let her touch him, because I swear every robot she touches falls apart within a week. It's like a curse."
no subject
She and Poe would make a good couple. They complimented each other well, as shown with Beebee's whole design. "Sounds like you two make a good team," he answered with a less brilliant smile but didn't pull away.
"I'm really excited to meet him. And it sounds like a lot of progress is getting done lately. Congrats, Poe. You're nearly a father."
no subject
They made a great team. They just played for opposing ones.
Poe laughed again, and rustled Finn’s hair fondly.
“Close as I’m ever going to get, anyway,” he teased back.
no subject
But now he was thinking about Poe around children, and it was doing even worse things to his heart. Someone this kind would make a great father someday if he ever wanted to. It made Finn's heart warm to think of Poe as a family man, whether kids were in the picture or not. Just happy with whoever he loved.
... Right. Time to think of something else. "I don't know much about robots, though, so don't quote me on that."
no subject
"The whole process of getting them is kind of the issue. Though, I guess there's always adoption."
He knew he was toeing the line real close, here. He wasn't out, on campus. Not that he was afraid to be, but mostly because his adoptive mother had a pretty high position in the faculty and he was already enough of a loose canon. There were enough rumours about him banging every girl on the cheerleading team, he didn't need to add to that. Those rumours got people to back off. But he was a little too well aware of just how bad his sexuality would go down with certain segments of the population on campus. And he couldn't afford to knock someone out cold for it, which he almost definitely would do.
So he'd told himself to just cool it until after college. Not hard, right? He had a hand and the internet. He'd make it through.
But that was before he'd met Finn and convinced the other man to move in. Now, his reason for staying in the closet was a solely selfish one. The last thing he wanted was for Finn to feel like he'd been lied to, or even worse, unsafe. What if he found out and then didn't let Poe get this close to him, anymore?
So he told himself that it was fine, that they'd be friends, and that he didn't care.
And then just never actually stated how he felt about anything, sexuality wise.
That was safer, right?
Safer, maybe, but also killing him slowly. And he couldn't help, on days like this, thinking that divulging that information was worth the risk. That surely he and Finn were so close that Finn wouldn't just reject him?
Damn it, why was he such a coward now. Just say it, Poe. Say 'having kids as a gay man is a bit more complicated'. Say it. Say it.
"At least I'll have a cute robot in the meantime."
... Sigh.
no subject
It did sort of feel like he was just told a secret in confidence, though. That was special. That, at least, was something to treasure... Unless he was just lagging behind on the little snippet secrets of Poe that other people got to see daily. Again, who could tell?
"Well," he continued, like there hadn't been a weird bump in the conversation, "I think you'll make a really great robot dad."
no subject
He wet his lips unconsciously and then slowly - smoothly - pulled his fingers away from Finn’s hair and settled his arm around the man’s shoulders instead. He gave a squeeze, but then didn’t let go. It was fine? This was fine.
He cleared his throat and then said with a grin, “Knowing you, it’ll want you to adopt him in the first minute of meeting you. I’ll have to beg you to split custody.”
no subject
So he took it as a joke. How else was he supposed to take it? "Like I said, you'd do a great job. I don't think I'd mind splitting with you."
It was supposed to be a joke, but just talking about this made his heart constrict a little. It'd probably hurt more later when he was thinking about his without Poe's smile to distract him.
no subject
He was really, really playing it close. He needed to change the subject, fast.
He turned his head, and there was Finn, right under his nose. He couldn’t help but draw a long breath in. Damn it, Finn smelled so good—
He chuckled at his own stupidity, but then murmured nearly into Finn’s hair. “You eaten yet?” Cool bro, good save.
no subject
Delusional, maybe. Hopeful, definitely. He relaxed again, nearly settling into Poe's neck and chest, being absolutely ridiculous.
"No." His voice came out soft, unsure, and he had to clear it to sound normal again. "Not yet. Wanna go grab something?"
Maybe it'd be better to have a minute alone, but Finn wasn't that nice to himself.
no subject
And yet, he squeezed Finn a little harder, pulling him a little closer. His heart could stop hammering any second now...
“... why don’t we order something in?” He murmured before he could stop himself.
no subject
It felt like it was. Finn swallowed. "Sounds good. What do you have... in mind...?"
Looking up at Poe was a bad idea. He could count every eyelash right now if he wanted to, but Poe's eyes alone were distracting, looking at him like that.
... He wasn't looking at him like anything, though. This was all in Finn's head. He should turn away. Or... wait until Poe did first... But he did clear his throat. "Whatever you want. I'm, uh, up for anything." Because this was normal and fine.
no subject
He felt like his heart was about to tear in two.
“Anything?” He asked, unable to keep the husky Hope from his voice.
It was too late. Part of him had already decided what to do as soon as Finn looked up at him like that. The delay was just the rest of him catching up. He leaned in, a fraction of an inch, breath hitching as he paused. He wanted to give Finn a chance to stop him, but not enough of one to smash his hearts to pieces first.
So he leaned in, the tension between them thick, and then finally he was leaning the rest of the way and placing a very careful, very chaste kiss upon those soft, perfect lips.
no subject
He froze, unbreathing, eyes wide. He couldn't believe it so much that processing the feeling of Poe's lips pressing against his was nearly impossible.
This could not be happening.
Though once he realized that something certainly was, he pressed in just a tiny bit, just enough to feel it and remind himself that this was- this- this was happening?
no subject
Poe felt Finn freeze and immediately a cold chill washed over him. Idiot. Idiot, idiot, idiot. Reading what you want to in a situation and not what’s actually there.
He inwardly cursed himself, drawing back before he realised Finn was pressing in.
“Sorry,” he murmured quickly, “sorry, Finn, I should’ve—“
no subject
Poe just kissed him. Just like that.
... Wait, why was he apologizing?
