He was gone for barely more than two weeks, but when Poe returned to earth, everything had changed. He messaged Finn almost the minute he was out of the Porter building, since he knew the man would be at work at this time of day.

Finn checked his phone a few minutes after it went off, and all the air in his lungs whooshed out at once. Poe was back. After two extremely long weeks, he was back.

And he expected Finn to 'finish up work' for some reason.

He's going to go quickly beg off the last 20 minutes of work or so. Shouldn't be too hard since he's been doing overtime since Poe left.

Oh, Poe had been gone awhile, hadn't he? Finn bit his lip, worried about the conversation that was going to be. The other seemed to be in pretty high spirits so far, though, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad?

He pushed the thought away.

Instead of texting back, Finn appeared at the porter building, spying Poe almost immediately. With a big smile, he ran forward and grabbed him up in a hug, whether he was ready or not. "Hey! You're back!"

Poe grinned the instant he saw Finn, wide and broad and with zero reservations. He through his arms around Finn, hugging tightly and giving him a warm, full kiss on the cheek.

“I’m back. And I’m damn glad you’re still here.”

The kiss was a little unexpected, but Finn wasn't about to complain. Kind of made him want to push the boundaries a little and return it but he basked in what he got anyway.

"Of course, I'm still here. Had to wait for you to come back." He pulled back far enough to look at Poe, desperately wanting to ask about home but not ready to ruin this mood. "You didn't miss much, by the way. Everything at base is just how you left it, too."

"Hope I didn't leave you waiting long," Poe said, giving Finn's arm a squeeze as he pulled back, still smiling warmly at him.

"You've missed a bit, but it's looking good. Gonna be a long haul but we've been picking up allies all over the place, so - It's good, Finn. It was real easy to feel real dejected about it before, but. I think the universe is gonna bounce back."

News like that was almost unbelievable. Finn's last memories of home, after all, were of barely clinging on to hope.

"Really?" Why would Poe lie about that, even sweetly. So a big grin broke over his features, wishing he could have seen this, too. "I can't- That's amazing. It's incredible," he said with a laugh, wrapping Poe in a second, briefer hug. "I can't wait to see it, too."

Poe laughed, hugging him back, just as tight even though it was brief.

"You will! You will, no need to rush it. We'll show up exactly when we left. We're not totally out of the woods yet, but it's looking good, Finn. The galaxy doesn't want the First Order either, and they're starting to agree to fight."

He grabbed Finn's hand and squeezed it like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"But come on. I could use the vacation. Let's go home."

It sounded far too good to be true, but Poe clearly believed every word he said. "It sounds like home is more of the vacation spot these days." He wished Earth could be as calm as they needed it to be but it was the best they had for now. Much better than what Finn was used to, anyway.

"You're going to have to tell me everything," he said, squeezing his hand like they did this all the time. If Poe wanted a little physical closeness right now, Finn would generously indulge. "After some rest, anyway. Hold on."

A blink and they were on the grounds of Base One.

It still made him queasy, but he was in too good a mood to let that bring him down, so he laughed it off as they arrived at Base One, still holding Finn’s hand far longer than necessary.

“Still would rather fly,” he said with a grin, but didn’t let go of Finn’s hand. “I’ll tell you whatever you want to know, but honestly I’m just- haha, it’s just nice to get a break for once. We haven’t had two minutes to ourselves since w—“

It was at that exact moment that Poe remembered something very vital. This piece of information was something he should have realised the moment he arrived, but it had been second nature to him for long enough back home that he hadn’t even thought about it. But that was the kicker, wasn’t it. This wasn’t back home.

And here, they weren’t dating.

He flushed, suddenly, and let go of Finn’s hand a little too quickly with a laugh.

“Anyway, lets just enjoy ourselves,” he continued, though his mood was quickly being tempered.

Finn frowned for a second, a bit shocked at the sudden change. Haven't had two minutes alone since what? Some harsh battle, presumably.

But that's okay. All in time, if Poe even wanted to discuss it at all.

A smaller smile than before was quick to return to Finn's features, his hand clapping Poe on the back. "Well, come on. I've got the whole afternoon free," he answered, already moving towards Poe's unit. "How long has it been for you, anyway? You were gone for about two weeks from this side. We were getting worried."

“Two weeks? Damn. That’s longer than usual. Though I was home longer than usual too, so maybe that makes sense.” He fell into step with Finn, already regretting letting go of the other man’s hand.

“It’s been six months, for me. So a lot’s happened. In the war, but ah- you know. Between people, too. Not sure how much I should say, though. You’ll get there eventually.”

"Yeah, I will." It was nice to have plain confirmation that he was still alive, though that should have been obvious already. "Just tell me whatever you want me to know. It doesn't sound... bad, at least. Knowing that we've managed some progress is enough."

He opened the door to Poe's unit, standing aside to let him go in first. "Could always be worse, right?"

"It's not bad. I mean - we've taken losses, but a hell of a lot less compared to the D'Qar evacuation. We've been pretty damn careful." He stepped inside, and the place was both alien and familiar at the same time, his two overlapping sets of memories trying to make themselves mesh together in his head.

"Good things have happened to. It's just - you know. Ah. Gotta remember what's from here and what's from there, you know? Keep myself from getting confused by referencing things you haven't even lived yet."

The reassurance helped a lot. Everything between waking up on the Raddus and leaving Crait had been terrible and was a high bar to reach in casualties. At least nothing that bad had happened again. It would have been the end of them.

"I don't mind," Finn answered, following Poe inside. "I mean unless you want me to be surprised. Otherwise, I'll make sure you don't lose track of... whatever the present is." He just chuckled at himself a little. Weird how he was already used to this weird way time acted on Earth.

"Well, you won't be surprised, exactly, since it'll all make sense when you live it, but uh--" He flushed again, busying himself by walking to the kitchen and pretending to check what was in his fridge.

Not a lot.

But he'd gotten into trouble once before, by not being honest with Finn about this kind of stuff, he just wasn't sure if telling him would jinx it. Everything had happened so organically and easily back home, would telling Finn about it ruin it?

But he couldn't stand to have Finn so angry at him, again. So he'd just have to find a way to say it.

"There's, uh... Something completely unrelated to the war that I'm not sure I should tell you or not. I guess just - take it as information and not as a request? Or a demand? Or just -- I don't know, Finn, is it going to make it weird if I tell you this stuff, or is it going to make it weirder if I don't tell you this stuff?"

Clear and eloquent, as always.

Just a few minutes ago, Poe was all smiles and carefree energy. Now he seemed nervous about something back home.

Finn followed Poe to the threshold of the kitchen, standing there silently for a moment with a clear look of confusion and worry. "I... have no idea." So far, not saying anything was getting pretty weird. Request? Demand? What did that mean? "Is it bad?"

"No- no!" He quickly reassured him. Great. Getting off to a good start so far. Poe gave an apologetic look and ran a hand through his hair.

"No, no, definitely not bad. It's good. It's - well, it's really good, as far as I'm concerned, I just - uh--" Cool. Great. Eloquent. Amazing.

Fuck.

He felt his face getting progressively warmer.

What was he so nervous about, anyway?

"I just don't want you to feel like you have to live up to something you haven't lived yet. You know? But on the other hand - I mean, why waste time while we have it--"

And now he was talking about wasting time? So, it was a good thing that happened back home that Poe didn't want Finn to feel obligated about but he also didn't want to waste time either. And he was blushing. Were they- Did they finally get together?

But surely Poe would know Finn wouldn't feel a sort of obligation about that. Wasn't his feelings about the two of them clear? The only reason he never acted was that he was waiting for Poe to do it first, considering the other's history. It was more his decision, Finn felt.

It didn't make much sense, though. Why was Poe so nervous?

"If it's as big of a deal as it seems, we could just... talk about it? Go from there?" His hand ended up on the back of his neck, starting to get nervous, too. Hopeful, though. He'd been waiting for Poe would come around for a while now, if he ever would.

"You don't have to tell me if you aren't sure," he added hastily, curious as hell.

Assuming Poe knew anything other than how to fly and how to blow things up was asking a lot of him, honestly.

Everything had been a lot more jumbled, when he was here last. But now it was like everything was incredibly clear, and he couldn't quite figure out why he hadn't just gone for it before. Now, though, there was that awkward gap again. But unlike last time, he now felt like those feelings had just been fated from the beginning.

It just...

He laughed again, self consciously, and rubbed the back of his head.

"It just, uh... I guess there's no romantic way to do it, huh?" Mostly to himself, but he finally pulled his eyes up to meet Finn's and grinned at him a little sheepishly. "I'll have to make that up to you later, but uh... yeah. I don't know exactly what to tell you, Finn. But we're uh - together. Back home." There was the slightest pause, and then hastily: "But like I said, I'm not - I know that it's not the same here, that things are different between places, and I mean - I know you'll catch up eventually, but I'm not gonna hold you to how things are there while we're here, I just gotta figure out how to readjust myself--"
