Just a few minutes ago, Poe was all smiles and carefree energy. Now he seemed nervous about something back home.
Finn followed Poe to the threshold of the kitchen, standing there silently for a moment with a clear look of confusion and worry. "I... have no idea." So far, not saying anything was getting pretty weird. Request? Demand? What did that mean? "Is it bad?"
no subject
"No, no, definitely not bad. It's good. It's - well, it's really good, as far as I'm concerned, I just - uh--" Cool. Great. Eloquent. Amazing.
Fuck.
He felt his face getting progressively warmer.
What was he so nervous about, anyway?
"I just don't want you to feel like you have to live up to something you haven't lived yet. You know? But on the other hand - I mean, why waste time while we have it--"
no subject
But surely Poe would know Finn wouldn't feel a sort of obligation about that. Wasn't his feelings about the two of them clear? The only reason he never acted was that he was waiting for Poe to do it first, considering the other's history. It was more his decision, Finn felt.
It didn't make much sense, though. Why was Poe so nervous?
"If it's as big of a deal as it seems, we could just... talk about it? Go from there?" His hand ended up on the back of his neck, starting to get nervous, too. Hopeful, though. He'd been waiting for Poe would come around for a while now, if he ever would.
"You don't have to tell me if you aren't sure," he added hastily, curious as hell.
no subject
Everything had been a lot more jumbled, when he was here last. But now it was like everything was incredibly clear, and he couldn't quite figure out why he hadn't just gone for it before. Now, though, there was that awkward gap again. But unlike last time, he now felt like those feelings had just been fated from the beginning.
It just...
He laughed again, self consciously, and rubbed the back of his head.
"It just, uh... I guess there's no romantic way to do it, huh?" Mostly to himself, but he finally pulled his eyes up to meet Finn's and grinned at him a little sheepishly. "I'll have to make that up to you later, but uh... yeah. I don't know exactly what to tell you, Finn. But we're uh - together. Back home." There was the slightest pause, and then hastily: "But like I said, I'm not - I know that it's not the same here, that things are different between places, and I mean - I know you'll catch up eventually, but I'm not gonna hold you to how things are there while we're here, I just gotta figure out how to readjust myself--"
no subject
Then Poe just... came out and confirmed it. They managed, against all odds, to be together back home. The entire concept of home was actually starting to sound way too good to be true. How did any of this happen to them? How did they get so lucky as to have all of that back there?
Didn't matter now. Finn was stunned, but a grin slowly started to grow as Poe rambled on. "No romantic way," he repeated, almost scoffing at the words. "You could have just asked me out."
no subject
"Well, I mean, in my defense I didn't have to, last time. It uh - it just sort of happened - there was yelling about 'stupid reckless pilot antics' involved, if I remember correctly." He wet his lips unconsciously.
"But uh, yeah. You want to give it a try while we're here?" He wet his lips again. "... Because I'd like to."
no subject
"But yeah, Poe." His smile turned into something softer, a little less shocked with this pretty sweet turn of events. "I'd definitely like to."
no subject
"Good." The smile crinkled at the edges of his eyes. "Because I have not gotten a chance to spent any time alone with you in weeks, and I think I should probably try to do things properly, this time. So let's go on a date."
no subject
It could all be temporary. One or both of them could port out tomorrow. The war could take a bad turn hours after Poe left. Anything could happen, and he'd be lying if he said this wasn't frightening.
But Finn reached out and took Poe's hand in his, anyway, squeezing it firmly like before. "Let's go on a date," he repeated happily, his laughter getting in the way. "Yeah, let's. Where do you want to go? Anywhere at all."
no subject
"I've got a good idea for one, but it'll be a little unconventional. You'll need a warm jacket and we should probably pack a lunch."
He flashed a teasing grin. "Unless you really can't stand surprises."
no subject
In a bold act, he lifted their joined hands and kissed Poe's knuckles before releasing him. "I'll get a jacket." Excuse him while he walks away and to have a Moment... and look for that jacket.
no subject
He turned and immediately went to the kitchen, which- well. He had almost no food, because he'd been gone for two weeks. Great. Okay, take-out it was. Before Finn came back, he made a quick call to a local deli and ordered them some sandwiches and salad. He could pick it up on the way. Then he went and grabbed a blanket out of the closet.
Once he was set, he came and found Finn.
"Two questions. One, are you ready? And two, do you know where my carpet is?"
no subject
"What about lunch?" he asked with a smile, handing over the carpet only to notice nothing in Poe's arms.
no subject
He rolled the carpet out in front of the doorstep and then stepped on it, looking back to reach a hand out to Finn.
no subject
So he gripped Poe's hand and got on the carpet like all the times before. Felt a little different now, though. "No crazy pilot antics, all right?"
no subject
"I am absolutely not going to promise that," He said with a laugh, but then his expression turned warm and fond. "But don't worry. I'd never let anything happen to you." He gave Finn's hand another squeeze and then finally released it, gesturing for the man to take a seat with him as the carpet slowly rose. Once they were both secure, it sped up, and they were off into the sky.
Picking up the food was quick - a man ran out of the deli to meet them with a brown paper bag, and Poe quickly paid (his wallet had been in his jacket) and then took off again. A little while later they were approaching the coast, the glimmer of ocean on the far horizon.
no subject
He hadn't really expected the ocean. Wasn't sure what to expect at all, to be fair. Whatever Poe's plan was going to end up being, this was already pretty magnificent. And his hand stayed gripped in Poe's the entire flight.
"It's beautiful from up here. Never seen the ocean like this before." Like this, meaning so many things. From this height, no. Feeling like he was floating rather than on a flying carpet, definitely not.
no subject
They flew out past the beach and over the water, the sun warming them despite their height. After a few minutes a little rocky island appeared on the horizon, and as it grew closer, the cliffs that jutted up from the waves became more and more obvious. It wasn’t a big place - only a few acres across - but there was even a little grass and a few low bushes in amongst the rocks. And birds. A lot of birds.
He angled them down toward the little island.
“Okay spot for a picnic, don’t you think?”
no subject
He hadn't expected an actual island. "It's amazing. How did you even find this?"
no subject
A few of the birds took off as they landed, but plenty of them just watched lazily from where they were sitting, unconcerned. There was a brisk wind and it was fairly chilly, despite the sun, but once they were on the ground Poe pulled out the blanket. “Come here, we’ll tuck in under this and it’ll keep us cozy.”
no subject
It was colder than he expected and far more beautiful. Such isolation apart from the wildlife... Did he mention that this was hard to believe?
After gawking up at the mass of birds, Finn smirked and wrapped the blanket around himself, cuddling up to his boyfriend and heat source. "Thought of everything, huh?"
no subject
He snuggled up against Finn and tucked the blanket in underneath them before pulling over the paper bag full of lunch.
"Though probably going to have to go a bit slower than those fantasies had originally accounted for," He added with a laugh.
no subject
He leaned against Poe, hesitant about getting more contact but craving it all the same. "I'm so glad you're back," he said in a bit too serious of a whisper, his eyes on the lunch but gaze much further away.
Right. He was here now. No time for that, no matter how overwhelmed Finn was about everything right now. He shook himself and dragged a little smile on his face. "What'd you order for us?"
no subject
“Just some sandwiches and salad,” he said absently, passing the bag over to Finn, his expression settling into a frown.
“But listen, I... I’m glad I’m back, to. I never would have left you if I’d been given the choice.”
no subject
"I know it's not your fault. It was just a long time, and a lot of people started assuming you weren't coming back..." Finn had even lost a little faith. He'd been trying to rationalize it with himself over the last few days. "You're here now, though. It doesn't matter. I'm just glad you're here."
