Again.
He tried not to panic like last time, tried to keep an upbeat attitude around everyone, even Archie. It was getting frustrating, though, since they were all treating him like he was falling apart. Maybe he was, but they didn't need to know that.
When the distress message went out, Finn jumped into action like he usually would, so it took a moment to realize who the call was coming from.
He connected the line as fast as he could. "Poe! Poe, where are you? Are you okay? I can come get you!"
no subject
He put the call out with a silent plea to the Force, and settled in, determined to wait. But there was a reply almost immediately.
He connected the video call and - blinked, stunned, as he looked in the face of the storm trooper that just rescued him.
“Finn? You’re alive!”
no subject
Then he was suddenly worried again. "What do- Of course, I am! I'm still here. Are you okay? Where are you?"
no subject
“Yeah, yeah, I’m okay, at least I think I’m okay. I feel okay? I’m, uh, they just let me out. I didn’t go far, wanted to do the call out, first. Force, it’s good to see you, buddy.”
no subject
Not enough to teleport yet, though. He didn't want to break this connection.
"It's good to see you. It's been so-" Ugh, he doesn't want to get into that. Not really. Especially when Poe had waited months for him. "What happened back home?" Because it seemed like something clearly happened for Poe to be this haggard about it.
no subject
“Uhhh- not sure what else you think could have happened since, like, hours ago. It was a rough landing, I couldn’t eject. No idea where you landed. Honestly, a part of me thought we were both going to be dead—“
no subject
Poe could be from the future. Maybe. What did he mean by hours ago?
The dread was starting to get overwhelming.
no subject
“Did you hit your head on the way down? I have no idea how we got here, obviously, but I don’t know how you’d forget I was dragging you back to Jakku.”
no subject
He didn't remember home or Earth or any of it.
Finn just stared at the video, his heart shattering into millions of fragments. "I-..." The world had stopped, but he was well aware that he had to say something. "I'm... going to come and get you, okay? I know where you are. I'll be there soon and I'll explain everything. Don't- Don't go anywhere. I'll be there soon."
The feed shuffled before he turned it off, guilt that he cut the connection adding on to the mix. He couldn't let Poe see his tears right now, though. He didn't know how he could explain it.
Finn couldn't dwell on this. He couldn't let himself take time to process. He had to do something.
About fifteen minutes later, Finn appeared at Cape Canaveral practically out of thin air, before approaching the facility and looking for Poe. As much as he would have liked to keep a stern face, his features showed all the turmoil he was feeling right now.
no subject
Poe sighed, looking around, then back as his communicator. No other responses. So it must have been something on Jakku, maybe? That brought both of them here?
He paced as he waited, fidgeting, and he didn’t see Finn appear, but he spotted him soon after.
“Hey, buddy, how—“ He stopped dead when he saw the look on Finn’s face. “Hey, hey— what’s going on? Did something happen? Are you okay?”
no subject
He took a deep breath and nodded in a random direction, eager to walk away for them to have some privacy. "So they didn't explain things to you, I take it. I... don't really know how to do this, but-"
You know what? He was just going to go for it. This was going to be too much at once and Poe was never going to believe him, but what else did he have? "This planet's called Earth. It's not part of the galaxy we grew up in, though. We were brought here by those machines inside the base, things called Porters.
They- They sort of shift time and space. They can bring anyone here from anywhere at any point in time, so there are a lot of people here who aren't from our galaxy and some people who are, but they might be from the Rebellion or even before the Empire formed or-" He waved his hand in the air and stopped himself for the moment. That was already a lot.
no subject
But time?
“Wait, wait, wait. What do you mean, different times? Before the rebellion? Are you talking about time travel?”
no subject
"The General and her brother are here. Leia Organa and Luke Skywalker. Both of them are... young. They were brought here around the time of the Battle of Endor so-... You'll meet them soon. I know it's a lot."
Okay, deep breath. "Even I'm from a different point in time than you. My point is... about three or so days after our crash on Jakku." Didn't really seem like it was such a short amount of time.
Damn, he hadn't even gotten to the whole thing about Poe being on Earth before yet.
no subject
That was - that was two years after he was born. That was impossible!
He almost missed what Finn said as he continued, but somehow managed to catch the ‘three days’.
“Right. Okay.” He was frowning, clearly trying to make sense of it and clearly already starting to dismiss it. “Three days. That’s fine, you can catch me up, right? Maybe I just passed out longer than I thought.”
no subject
It was easier to think about this in a logical way than just getting emotional about it. He could process that later. Or never, maybe. Not thinking about it was the best option he could find.
"We found Luke Skywalker." That was a decent enough start without... getting into it. "I can try to catch you up more on home later but there's more."
no subject
“I knew you were a good man. Welcome to the team, Finn.”
Yeah he figured Finn would keep up the debriefing, but he needed to get that out first!
no subject
He laughed, smiling down at the ground even if the praise was painful. It still felt like Poe was the same, though, and that was good. It was worth the hurt. His hand gripped Poe's bicep, and he chewed on his lower lip to try hiding his smile and blush.
This was too much. It was painfully obvious why Poe had kept his secrets, and Finn found himself wanting to do much of the same. He couldn't, of course, but he could probably stall.
"Thank you... Your droid's fine, though, man. You worry too much about the little guy. Has more survival instincts than both of us combined. But, ah... he's not on Earth. Not right now."
no subject
"Yeah, I kind of figured. He would have replied to my signal if he could. You're the only one here, aren't you? From the Resistance. I know what you said about the General and the Battle of Endor, but--"
Wait a second -
"So you've met the General, now? Man, I feel like I missed so much."
no subject
"There's... more," he repeated, kind of ignoring the questions thrown at him, more or less. "Not just about home. You know how I said people come here from different points in time? Well, sometimes people leave and they come back from another point, either in the future or the past or... whatever. Anyway, sometimes when people leave, they lose their memories that they were ever here at all."
And now he had to stop Poe, reaching out to barely touch his arm again and trying to put on as much of a serious face as possible. "You were on Earth for about two years. Two weeks ago, you left and... now you're back." There was a lot he could ramble about with that bombshell, but Finn stayed quiet and tried to let Poe process. If he could.
no subject
"Two years?" He asked, his voice weirdly hollow and his expression drawing blank.
"This-- This really isn't funny, Finn. There's no way I'd stay away from the Resistance for two years, weird alien tech or not. What are you- Why are you doing this?"
no subject
Oh.
He quietly pulled out his phone, brought up his photo album, and showed the first on to Poe. The two of them sitting outside their units back at base. "That was from six months ago. We don't get to leave when we want. The porter controls everything. Trust me, we've tried. You've threatened to blow it up more than once."
He motioned for Poe to just take the phone and look himself, mostly sure that there was nothing... romantic on there. That was another conversation they needed to have and soon but maybe not right this second.
no subject
Then another.
Then another.
The anger disappeared from his face, but the dismay left in its wake was hardly better. After a long moment he finally just lowered himself down to sit on the curb of the road, flicking through pictures of a life he couldn't even remember.
"... This... Two and a half years?"
no subject
"A long time ago, I was here for about six months. I left and came back and... I don't have any of it either. It's happened to a lot of us." He deflated and licked his lips. "There's a lot to explain, but I'll try to be as precise and honest as I can, okay?"
Which included their relationship.
And Crait...
no subject
He hovered there, not really understanding what he was looking at, and realising:
"... Do I actually want to know?" He asked eventually. "Two years-- Two years is enough time to have a life here."
One in which he was apparently incredibly happy.
no subject
"You don't have to. If you don't want to know, I won't say anything. There are no obligations, okay? I get it, I've been there. You just... do whatever you want to do."
