But then, impulsively, before he could second guess himself, he sent a quick:
<3
And then he signed off before he could see a response.
Idiot.
He leaned back against the wall, his chest a weird mix of excitement and anxiety at the same time. It would be fine. He needed this. He needed to know, for better or worse, if this was something he could do. He already cared about this guy, he just... needed to know if he could love him, too. If he could finally leave Finn behind him and move on.
He just needed to find them a ride, now.
True to his word, he wanted until the next day. But then, right around noon, he hopped back online and sent the following message.
no longer upset
still feel the same
go out with me
no subject
a thousand times yes
<3
He had been waiting all night and day for this text, still the only light in his life that was overwhelming enough to block out the grief of slowly losing Poe. He couldn't stop smiling like a goof at the message and the cute little heart.
They were finally going to meet. He couldn't let himself dwell on anything else right now except for HOTSHOT.
where do you want to go?
we can go anywhere now
no subject
well i figured out where i knew that picture from
and it's only about a two hour hyperflight away, so

Two hours stuck together on a ship... He really hoped that HOTSHOT liked him in person.
no subject

come on down any time :)
It wasn't a huge ship - about the size of a small imperial shuttle, if nothing like it in shape. And Poe wasn't lying - he was currently busying himself (and BB-8) with going over every inch of the thing and making sure someone hadn't just rented him a death trap.
That's where he'd still be, whenever TROOPER showed up, chatting excitedly with BB-8 and saying something like: "Actually the rear stabilizer is in better condition than most of our X-wings, I can't even complain--"
no subject
The whole way, he kept trying to imagine what he looked like without mixing his features with Poe's. It was actually a little difficult, which made him want to see him all the more.
The hangar didn't have very many people hanging around, and none of them seemed to be in any jovial mood or like they were waiting for someone. His search was quickly whisked away when he heard a very familiar voice, his heart smashing into his ribs. But he-
He turned a corner to make sure, only to find Poe and BB-8 talking. "Poe?"
No, he- He couldn't be here. Finn didn't know how he was going to handle meeting HOTSHOT with Poe literally here of all places.
no subject
The confusion was obvious in his voice as he stepped back down, looking over at the one person who could easily bring this whole mission to a screeching halt just by saying he wasn't happy about it.
"What are you - what are you doing here? Who told you I was here?"
He hadn't told anyone other than BB-8 and TROOPER where he was going. He didn't want to get derailed and disturbed...
no subject
"I- Sorry. I didn't know you were here. I was supposed to meet someone." But he couldn't just... run away right now, could he? Finn did at least glance around but saw no new faces. "I didn't mean to disturb... whatever you're up to."
no subject
Force, he didn't want to talk about this. Not with Finn. Not before he could even try. But he couldn't exactly not, right?
"I'm -- look, Finn, normally I'd be overjoyed to see you here, but I - I'm supposed to be going on a date." He said it a little fast, as if trying to force it all out. "I'll take you flying later, alright?"
no subject
And isn't that what Finn wanted, too? To just run away?
Didn't mean the words hurt any less. His heart felt shredded, being left to the side like this even though he knew the logic behind it all. How could he meet HOTSHOT now and still be even close to what the other deserved?
"Right! Of course. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt. Um- Good luck, okay? I'll catch you later." He quickly turned and left, a little more promptly than he had yesterday, making a beeline for the entrance to the hangar.
He'd just wait and stay as far away from Poe as possible. It would... be okay. As soon as he met HOTSHOT the rest would just fall into place. It would be okay.
no subject
Fuck, he was an idiot.
"Finn, wai--" But Finn was already gone.
BB-8 whistled low and mournfully as Poe swore and kicked something hard enough to stub his toe.
"I know. I know. I'm going after him, I can't not go after him. Just - if Trooper gets here, just tell him to take a seat inside, okay? I'll be back."
And then he was off, dashing back outside and trying to track his best friend down, all because he was probably imagining that hurt look in the first place.
"Finn! Would you just -- force, where did you go--"
no subject
Well, he was really there to sulk and pretend he was definitely not sad about what had happened, but that task was gone from his mind now.
"Hang on, Poe. What's wrong? You okay? I thought-" Maybe he needed something for the date. Suggestions or whatever. That would be- Finn almost dreaded whatever Poe was going to say.
no subject
Damn it. How did Finn still manage to just - throw everything right into the wind, for him?
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine, I just - felt like I was a bit of a dick, so - Look, you said you were waiting for someone, right? Well I've been here for a few hours and know basically everyone here, so - I can help you find whoever you're looking for, or you- you can come and hang out with me until--" He felt a little queasy. God. Poor TROOPER. Could he actually do that, to the man?
"Just - It's fine, you didn't have to leave."
no subject
But of course, Poe already knew HOTSHOT somehow. Of course.
He shrugged. "I don't actually know his name, anyway. That... probably sounds kind of weird. We met online and we were going to meet in person out here. It's, uh-" Not a date. He didn't want Poe to know that for some reason. "I don't know. It's probably weird.
"But that's all right. I mean, you have a date. That's a pretty good, right? It sounds like it's going well."
Okay. Shut up. He had to clamp his jaw shut to stop rambling.
no subject
But Poe was not a more intelligent man. He was a flustered, confused man.
He rubbed a hand through his hair and frowned, glancing away.
"It's not weird. I'm kind of doing the same thing. I, uh... I mean, it's going good, I think, but we haven't actually - I haven't technically met him yet. We met online, too. So today was - I don't know, I had this whole date thing planned..." But we was wilting fast. He couldn't do this. Who was he fooling?
no subject
That- Oh.
But, no. That's impossible. Out of all people in the area- HOTSHOT and Poe were not the same guy. He had spent so long trying to face that fact that he couldn't look away from it anymore.
"That's a pretty crazy coincidence... Isn't it?"
no subject
“Wait, What? You’re going on a date with someone you haven’t even met? What— what about Rey??” Because if someone else had gotten in there when he could have, he was going to be very upset.
Coincidences could wait!!
no subject
"What about Rey?" He blinked, glancing to the hangar and people. No new faces yet. "I-... Weren't you literally about to go on a date with someone you haven't met yet?"
It was half to make Poe realize that this was weird and half to tell him to mind his own business, in a way. Worry was cute, and Finn appreciated it, but really?
no subject
He was having a really hard time wrapping his head around what was actually going on, here...
He scrubbed his face vigorously.
“Sorry. It’s not any of my business. What you guys do—“ He couldn’t get through the sentence, suddenly way more hurt than he expected. If Finn was free to date other people, why had he never even thought of him?
no subject
He couldn't decide if he was confused or offended. A lot of both, maybe? "Are you sure you're feeling okay? You're acting- I don't know what you're acting like."
no subject
But that was the moment where Finn’s words finally reached Poe’s brain.
“Hots—“ No. No, it couldn’t be. Could it? Seriously? He felt his face heat up.
Trooper.
Stormtrooper.
“... oh for the love of— I am an idiot—“
no subject
He could definitely agree that Poe was acting like an idiot, but stopped himself and sighed. "You're not an idiot, Poe. It's a misunderstanding, okay? It doesn't matter. It's all right."
no subject
Pretty sure it might matter a lot, actually.
