Oh, if only Finn had one of his own. A couple months... That could have been him. If he had a tattoo like that, it could have been the other half to Poe's. In reality, they were both alone.
"Why did it do that? Why did it activate without another? Could it... just have malfunctioned or-...?" He didn't know what he was talking about so stopped the questions there.
no subject
“They spark when you meet. Some people, they get theirs and it activates in a day. Took mine fourteen years. Which is pretty unusual in itself, so I should have known it was always going to be complicated.”
He paused, wetting his lips.
“Honestly, I thought Rey would have told you about them.” But maybe she felt the same way Poe did?
no subject
But he didn't know what to say to that. There was nothing he really could say to make it any better. He desperately wanted to ask who this other person was, but that was private... not to mention it would definitely drive Finn to confrontation.
Instead, he latched on to the one other thing Poe mentioned. "Rey has one? I hadn't noticed." He didn't expect her to have gotten one on Jakku... Made him feel just that much more isolated, really.
no subject
“You should talk to her about it.”
Maybe she’d convince Finn to get one.
no subject
And if it wasn't Poe, then- Maybe he'd find someone, though. Someone for him. Maybe he already knew them, and they were just waiting for him to get a tattoo, too. Was that part of it? If he never bothered, would his soulmate always be alone? Just like him now?
Catching himself lost in thought, Finn shook himself. "I, uh- I don't want to make people uncomfortable..." Another subject. Any other subject. "Um, so, how many of these crates we got left?"
no subject
He watched Finn a second too long and then forced a smile to his lips.
“Uh- maybe a dozen.” But he took the subject change for what it was - a quiet instruction to drop the topic, and he obliged.
no subject
But, right. Crates. Judging from Poe's forced smile, the faster they finished this work and left, the better off this whole subject would be. "We can handle that," he sighed and quickly (though awkwardly) took back to the task.
no subject
Mostly that was because he was thrown back into work, back into missions, and if he was a little more gung-ho about it than usual, who could blame him? Sometimes he felt like the entire Resistance day on his shoulders, and so he kept a bright face up when appropriate, and a stern war-like one when required, and played his role as well as he was able. Leia was giving him more and more responsibilities, and he couldn’t say no.
Even if it felt like he was tearing chunks out of himself whenever he had to be far from Finn.
He got back far too late at night for this latest mission. Everyone was asleep save the droids, and Poe couldn’t help but relish the quiet moment that was so different from everything he’d been through, lately. He sat down by the only window - a huge broad thing that looked out over the back approach to the base - grasslands and a forest beyond. And the sky. A huge sky, full of stars.
He felt the tingle in his arm that alerted him that he was in the same place as Finn. It had started pulsing as soon as he was on base, but he’d only given it attention now. He pulled up his sleeve to watch it glow in time with his heart beat, and he let out a long sigh as he touched it with his finger tips.
“Yeah, I already know he’s here,” he whispered quietly to the tattoo. It did not answer him.

When he brought up problems like Poe's (without mentioning names), she assured him that those things happened so rarely that she wasn't sure they were real. Finn knew otherwise but kept silent.
Time passed, and Finn tried to bury the whole idea. Unsuccessfully. What eventually wore him down was the thought of his soulmate alone all because he wasn't brave enough to see this through. So, purposely choosing a time when Poe was away on a long mission, Finn got his own tattoo. He didn't want to add insult to injury when it came to the other man, and Rey was all the cheerleader he really needed. It looked almost normal on his skin, not glowing and beautiful. All that was left was to wait.
He wanted to show Poe as soon as he got back. Not to boast but to make him aware as soon as possible rather than hear it from someone else...
Though the warm pulse in the middle of the night woke him up. Half convinced it was a dream, Finn rolled out of bed and followed the sensation as best he could. And what he found was- "Poe?" He quietly stood at the other end of the hall, his arm angled away in an attempt to hide what must be a dreadful misunderstanding.
no subject
“Oh hey, bud. No luck sleeping? I uh - I just got back.”
no subject
At the same time, Finn was fidgeting and knew it. Poe was clearly the only one here, and this new mark was practically screaming at him about it. Except Poe already found his soulmate in another.. who didn't find their soulmate in him...
Should he show him now? Should he tell him?
no subject
If it were anyone else, Poe would begrudge them the interruption, but Poe could never pretend he didn’t want to be with Finn whenever he could. So he just stood up and walked over to him, the gentle pulse in his arm going ignored.
“Everything going alright on this end?”
no subject
Or perhaps Finn was just overly worried because of the connection he held the entire time. When Poe walked closer, there was no mistaking who the tattoo was trying to reach out for. How was that fair, though? The one person he wanted, the one person he couldn't have- He was already regretting this whole decision.
"Y-Yeah, it-... Um-" He had no idea how to begin or what to even disclose, so Finn just held his arm out to show him the activated tattoo. Better than words, he reasoned.
no subject
He couldn’t read it’s signals, of course. Those were for Finn along. But it was impossible not to notice that it was activated. He forced a smile to his lips that he hoped was soft.
“She convinced you to get one, huh?” His voice was quiet, and he met Finn’s eyes as his heart sank.
“Congratulations.”
no subject
Though, he didn't know what to make of Poe's expression. Was he just tired after the mission? Or did he feel worse for his own situation? Or did he know what he was to Finn and didn't want that? Whatever it was, his touch felt so much more electrifying now that Finn had to take a deep breath before continuing.
"I... think it's sort of the same as yours, though. I don't think they feel the same way."
It was possible, but Poe never mentioned that his tattoo reacted to Finn specifically. He still wasn't even sure they could activate when the other person had no tattoo. There were too many questions, a lot of possibilities, and not enough hope. Finn couldn't bring himself to go any deeper with it like this.
no subject
“Why did she tell you to get it, then? I mean - you were hers, right?” That had been his assumption from the start.
He really should let Finn’s arm go, but for some reason he couldn’t. His tattoo was pulsing faster - or was it his heart was racing and his tattoo was trying to keep up?
no subject
Yet, Poe thought that they-... Yeah, well-... He looked away and shuffled in place, his hand turning to hold Poe's arm, too. "It's someone else. It's all right. It-" It doesn't matter. He couldn't bring himself to go that far. "It's all right."
no subject
“But they didn’t ping you back?” He hated how hopeful he sounded, wetting his lips as he tried to calm down a little. “I thought— look, Finn, I’m sorry. I thought it was Rey. I just figured that she and I—“ he fumbled, heartbeat overwhelmingly loud.
“Am I allowed to tell you, then? Is that okay? I know it’s not- I mean, sure, I might not be your soulmate, but I can’t really say I’m not half glad that they don’t- - I mean, fuck, I’m sorry, this is probably the worst timing—“
no subject
But Poe mentioned soulmates- That he was a little glad about not being his soulmate or glad because Poe wasn't the only one like this or-
Finn moved his hand down Poe's arm, wanting to leave and stay all at once. There was something going on here, some sort of miscommunication that was about to hurt him a lot, so he was already saying the truth before he could stop himself: "Poe, you're my soulmate."
Then the implications hit him, and sudden dread that he'd just lost Poe for good filled his heart. Finn took his hand away. "Sorry."
no subject
“No,” he replied, though it sounded more confused than denying. “No, you’re mine, Finn. You don’t— you don’t feel that way about me, I already—“ But it was slowly dawning on him, his eyebrows raising.
“Wait, but you said yours was activated—- I wasn’t even here—“
no subject
But then he continued and-
That- No, that made no sense. "I'm not yours. Yours activated before I even got one. And mine only just came on when you got back. I could practically feel- No, you know what, I have no idea what's going on."
His feelings were being jerked around, and Finn was starting to get kind of pissed about it. Was Poe his soulmate? There was so much hope bottled into that idea that he couldn't quite believe it to be true. But logic was starting to have it all make sense, to the point that his fingers were shaking with the possibility. "Are you-? How am I-? Are you sure?"
no subject
“There’s a test! There’s a test, just—“ He started stripping off his jacket and rolling up his sleeve.
“If they— they’ll connect, they sync up. They’ll sync our heart beats. That’s what - that’s what I was told, anyway—“
no subject
Questions were flying through Finn's mind faster than he could voice them. Did it not matter if he had the tattoo or not? Could Poe's had activated to him without it? Wait, had Poe wanted this? Wanted him? Why hadn't he been interested before? Was he interested and just didn't say anything? Why?
Finn was dumbfounded, watching Poe undress and roll his sleeve up. "This is possible?" he asked in a quiet, far too hopeful voice, looking back up to Poe's eyes.
no subject
It was clear, seeing them like this, that they were meant to match. Even though they didn't flare at quite the same tempo, it was brighter than he'd ever seen his.
"Little more than possible, I think," he replied, giving Finn a grin as he reached out with his other hand and passed his fingers over the tattoo. His breath hitched, his heart shuddering as the signal reached for Finn's, and then--
And then, it felt like nothing else in the universe. As if he could feel a second heart in his chest, beating at a different rhythm, but then slowly aligning with his. It was almost uncomfortable, but the closer they god, the better it felt...
no subject
Once the heartbeats synced up and steadied out, he looked away from the bright glow of their tattoos to Poe's face. There were no words. He didn't even know what to do except look at the other man with awe, tears in his eyes.
They were soulmates. They couldn't be anything but.
But he did find words eventually in a chocked whisper, afraid of breaking this moment. "Why didn't you tell me?"
