Poe swallowed, his voice dropping lower, as if he was trying to keep from being overheard despite the house being empty.
“But Finn, I... what if I’ve already done something and don’t remember? People don’t just lose a year for no reason.”
no subject
"But we will figure it out. Somehow."
no subject
He shifted a little closer, not even thinking about it, murmuring in the dark with Finn’s face close enough to be hard to focus on.
“But as long as you promise you’ll run...”
no subject
"You are not a walking time bomb. You're going to be okay." And he was already beginning to regret this promise... "Listen, it's a lot. It's a hall of a lot. But you won't hurt me, all right? Just... stop thinking about it. Try to sleep, if you can.
no subject
“... Okay. Yeah. Okay.” He turned over onto his back and immediately regretted it, missing proximity. So instead he shuffled a little closer, until his side was pressed against Finn’s.
It wasn’t that simple. Of course it wasn’t. But he was exhausted and couldn’t do anything. But if he managed to relax, it would make life easier for Finn. So he was going to try.
The Hall of a Lot
He stayed on his side to allow the other room, trying desperately to stay still when Poe got closer, doing his best imitation of a statue. His mind was anything but still, though, leaping across thoughts about these strange happenings and how close Poe was against him.
Eventually, he relaxed into the close proximity, staying quiet as he watched Poe... That was probably creepy, so he had to remind himself to close his eyes every now and then, even if his gaze did keep finding the others striking profile in the dark.
no subject
And he didn’t notice when the darkness finally took him.
90 minutes later, after Poe had had some uneasy but dreamless sleep, the dreams began again.
And so did the phenomenon.
no subject
But the water wasn't sloshing. It was rising in the air, twining together like a braid before combining to form shapes and rivers, things unpredicatable and bizarre.
Finn was frozen, staring wide eyed at the sight, not knowing what to do. Should he let Poe rest? During this? How could he wake him easily enough for it to continue? How was this happening at all.
"Poe," he whispered softly, not really wanting to wake him but not knowing what else to do. They didnt talk about this part.
no subject
The bowls were moving now, too, trembling as first and then slowly raising spinning like tops through molasses.
Poe’s hand on Finn’s knee twitched, and everything dropped half a foot before stabilizing and slowly rising again.
no subject
"Poe," he tried softly again, a hand combing against Poe's hair even though his eyes stayed on the scene. "Poe, hey..."
no subject
He didn’t think to look at the bowls, his heart thumping at the tender touch.
“Did you—“ but as soon as he tried to speak everything crashed to the floor and Poe nearly jumped out of his skin again.
no subject
That had really just happened.
"Yeah, I saw it," he said breathlessly, not even wondering if that was Poe's original question or not.
no subject
He hadn’t actually believed it, at first. Had thought something was going on but that it had a reasonable explanation. But now?
He froze, staring at the discarded pile of bowls for a long, long moment.
“Fuck.”
no subject
Instead, he touched Poe's shoulder and made his way out of bed, leaving out the door for no longer than 10 seconds to bring back some towels. Something to do. Just keep moving and think while you're moving.
But when he probably should have put some effort into it, he just dropped them to the floor on top of the water and looked at Poe. "Now what?"
... As if he knew.
no subject
“... What happened to me?” He asked, a little desperate but still quiet.
As if he knew.
no subject
He stepped over the towels and sat on the bed again, pulling Poe's hands into his. "We'll figure it out together, okay?" His voice trembled, trying to hide the fear beneath. Not for these... powers, but for Poe. What's been done to him. What could be done to him.
no subject
Nothing made sense anymore.
He spent the next day sleeping. First he took everything out of his room other than his bed and the heavy furniture, and then he slept. He had endless terrifying dreams that he couldn't remember, but he didn't know what to do other than try to sleep it off and see if that changed anything.
The day after that, he got to work.
Without a word, he went straight outside in the morning, and didn't come back until the evening. He disappeared into the woods and told Finn he needed some time by himself, and came back only when it was starting to get dark. He ate. He collapsed.
He fell into this routine for the third and the fourth day, too, expression determined and defiant.
On the fifth day, he came back in the afternoon, eyes blazing with purpose, and through the backdoor open. "Finn! Finn!" he called into the the house, not even sure the other man was there.
no subject
When he heard Poe yelling for him, he could have sworn he just died there for half a second. Finn came tumbling to the backdoor like a stampede. "What? What's wrong? What happened?"
no subject
There was a shard of wood lying in his palm.
Nothing happened at first. Poe just stared at it as if willing it to explode. Several seconds passed and he started to look increasingly frustrated, until finally it started to move. It vibrated a little at first and then wavered, rising about an inch into the air as if hesitant - dipping back down into his palm before rising up again, trembling like a leaf on the wind.
no subject
That's what he figured Poe had been doing out there and, though he had expected to see the results, hadn't realized just how incredible it would be. It was working right in front of his face where they both could see. "How?"
no subject
"I don't know. I just - think real hard about it, I guess. Like trying to move a muscle that I can't feel. I don't know how to explain it."
He put the chip in his pocket.
"I guess in my sleep I... remember how to control it. That's the only way I can explain it."
no subject
That's what Finn had assumed from the start, anyway, that this wasn't something that really could be forced. It was a bit like learning something new until it became natural. But... that implied that Poe really had used it before. So maybe he was right. Maybe he was remembering something in his sleep?
no subject
"... I'm going to have to watch my temper," He murmured. "I don't know, Finn. Maybe it is subconcious. But I promise you, I never made anything fly before I disappeared. So whatever this is... Something happened to me. Or someone did this to me. Or--"
He looked a little queasy.
"Could I be a ghost, maybe? I don't even believe in ghosts, but--"
no subject
"Okay, we know that something happened to you that gave you this. We don't know what or why, but... that's progress. That's something... You can't get mad at the psychologists anymore, though." Easier said than done.
no subject
“They’re going to lock me up, Finn,” he murmured. “If they find out... even Leia won’t be able to stop them. And what am I supposed to do? What if they ask me to stay overnight for observation for some reason, or—“
