And Poe hadn't seen it? Wait, did Poe do that?
No. No, no. That's impossible.
"Hold on, I- You're okay. It's okay. I just thought- You didn't see that?" He walked over to one of the chips that had scattered, picking it up and examining it on all sides. That couldn't have just happened. And Poe would never believe him, anyway. He wasn't sure he believed it.
no subject
He pulled the hatchet free from the stump again.
“Whatever. It doesn’t matter, Finn. I’m just lodged in beurocracy. I wonder if they’re trying to convince Leia to just skip to the ending and lock me up.”
no subject
Except right now, he was going crazy at the expense of Poe's feelings. "No, no. It matters. I'm sorry." He fisted the wood chip and walked to Poe, stopping beside him. He didn't have time to be seeing things that weren't there. "You've got every right to be pissed off. Just- I know this sounds awful, but just try to have some patience, okay? You're here, you're alive. The rest will work out in time."
Then he glanced at the wood chip in his hand and apologized again. "Sorry, I... thought I saw something ridiculous. I didn't mean to get distracted."
no subject
He looked back at Finn, frowning, brows furrowed. "What do you mean, something ridiculous?"
no subject
But it couldn't last. This had to end eventually, right?
He had nothing to add, knowing that Poe was right. Instead, he sighed and looked down at the wood chip again. "I thought I saw these flying through the air. It's probably just-" Hunger? Stress? A damn stroke? "-me going crazy. Forget it. You, uh-... You want company?"
no subject
"I probably just stepped on them funny, or something." He put the hatchet down and walked over to Finn, looking a little concerned.
"Are you okay?" Because he hadn't really wanted company, but if something was wrong with Finn...
no subject
"Look, I can help you out here or get started on dinner, let you breathe alone for a minute." Because if Finn wanted anything, it was for the wood chip conversation to drop.
no subject
"... You go get dinner started. I'll be in after a few minutes. I just... need to blow off some steam, that's all."
no subject
A few more days passed, and Finn almost managed to forget that had ever happened at all. There were too many other things going on for him to dwell on the impossible. Yet here he was, standing in the living room in the middle of the night, trying to convince himself that he was still dreaming.
He had gotten up for- He couldn't even remember anymore. Regardless, it was to find Poe passed out on the couch instead of in his room. The body in the dark was easy to identify but everything else had taken him a minute. It was random objects - pens, paper, junk mail, his car keys, a couple of throw pillows - floating. Just floating in the air, gently moving up and down in the same rhythm of Poe's breathing.
This couldn't be real. He was dreaming or- or sleepwalking. He tapped a pillow, watching it spin on an imaginary axis. If- If this was real, and it wasn't, then this must be Poe's doing. Somehow.
Finn blinked hard a couple of times before pushing through orbit of random things, walking to the couch to shake Poe's shoulder, trying to sound at least a little gentle. "Poe? Poe, wake up."
no subject
And then suddenly everything came crashing down to the floor, clanging and rattling and falling over itself.
Poe sat bolt upright at the sound, reaching for a gun that wasn't there and swearing up a storm.
Interesting, he didn't swear at Finn. He didn't even look at Finn. Instead: "What the fuck keeps doing that?"
no subject
Oh no.
Poe did not just say that.
"Keeps doing what?" Finn asked in a slight tone of horror. Had this happened before? Had this been happening? He liked this better when being crazy was his best guess.
no subject
He glared around and then ducked under the couch to look. "I don't believe in ghosts, Finn."
Though maybe that was more to himself, than to Finn.
no subject
Poe was never going to believe him. Finn still didn't believe it! He glanced around as if an answer was going to suddenly pop out but-
With a tightlipped grimace, he shifted and looked back at Poe. "You remember what happened the other day with the wood chips? When I said they- they were floating?"
no subject
Floating and flying were two very different things.
no subject
"Well they were floating before they were flying but the pillows just now were only floating so-" He pointed at a throw pillow as if accusing it, as if it was the culprit all along. "And the pens and my keys and- and-"
no subject
Poe glanced around as Finn pointed stuff out, and slowly paled.
"... This - this doesn't make any sense. You saw it?"
no subject
"It doesn't make sense, but- but I saw it. I know what I saw." Did he? "It's happened twice now- No, it's happened more, hasn't- Where's my phone?" Why hadn't he recorded it!?
no subject
“Stop. No phone.” He grimaced. “Look, if- I’d something weird is happening, we need to figure it out, but the last thing I want... don’t record me. Please. Keep this between us.”
He swallowed.
“... it happened when I was asleep, right? Maybe just - maybe just bunk with me for a while.”
no subject
But he shook himself and tried to think. Okay. Okay, okay. If this was actually happening, then recording it would definitely be a bad idea. No one could know about it, especially with how everyone had been treating Poe lately. It would be terrible if they even thought that this could be happening.
So- So, yeah, okay. He took a few deep breaths. "Yeah. No, yeah, you're right. That makes sense. Okay. We can do that." They could even do it tonight. Finn sure as hell wasn't going back to sleep any time soon.
no subject
“We’ll... bowls of water. We’ll set some around the room. You sleep with me, and either you’ll see them, or - or they’ll splash when they fall.”
no subject
That more than anything solidified the fact that he really believed this was happening... To hell with it, he'd clean it up. "Yeah. We can do that." And off to the kitchen Finn went to gather some bowls.
no subject
“Sorry,” he murmured quietly. “I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m sorry.”
no subject
He had thankfully been able to calm down a little while getting the water together. Honestly, the darkness of night helped. Made everything seem less real. He could actually convince himself that this was really a dream. "Where will you be most comfortable?"
no subject
That was precisely what Poe was worried about. That something had been done to him. That the generals had been right, that something had nabbed him and made him into an enemy of the state...
He stood there, awkwardly, unable to say as much to Finn but wanting to. It often felt like Finn was the only one on his side with this at all.
He glanced over at the question, carefully cupping the bowl between both hands. He set it down on the floor next to his bed - about two feet away so that they hopefully wouldn’t get splashed, then gestures to his bed.
“You, uh - you take the side closest to the wall.” That way Finn would have to climb over him to get to the bowls. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust him, he just... needed to prove his to himself.
It wasn’t a big bed, though. Whatever happened, they were going to end up practically spooning just based on proximity.
no subject
But it could explain things. Or rather, give them more questions. It wasn't like Poe had just flown into a black hole or something, they knew that already. If he had been captured, how did they do this to him? Who even was 'they' at this point?
Later. He couldn't do this right now. Just... later.
Finn lied on his back and took a deep breath. "You think you'll be able to sleep?" At least, Poe seemed... calmer than him?
